History

The Altrusa Club of Colorado Springs formed on April 12, 1929, at the Elizabeth Inn with 11 members, and received its charter from the national club in 1932. The national club started in Nashville, Tennessee in 1917. It was the first classified women's service club in the United States. Altrusa went international in 1935. The purpose of the international club is described as follows: "Altrusa International Inc. is a world-wide service association of business women united in personal development and fellowship. Working together in local clubs, members volunteer their energies and expertise in a wide variety of projects dedicated to community betterment."

The Altrusa Club of Colorado Springs was active until 1991 when it was determined that there were not enough members to keep the club going. From 1929-1991 the club raised money to help many local organizations including the Pikes Peak Library District, the Pioneers Museum, and the local YMCA. Many of the services Altrusa supported aided women trying to enter the workforce. Membership to the club was classified, with no more than 10 percent of membership devoted to one profession.

The Altrusa Encyclopedia in Box 1, folder 2, offers information on all aspects of Altrusa International, including conferences, recruitment, by-laws, and history.

Arrangement

This collection was arranged in nine sub-series: Administrative, Minutes/Records, Programs/Meetings, Awards, Newsletters, Yearbooks, Photographs, Scrapbooks, Record Albums, and Artifacts. These series are not arranged in any particular order. Within the series the folders are arranged either alphabetically or chronologically. The Administrative series consists of records that have to do with the founding of the organization or the running of its everyday affairs. Minutes/Reports includes meeting minutes, president's reports, and treasurer's reports. Programs/Meetings includes any brochures, nametags, and other ephemera from conferences and seminars. It also includes speeches and other relevant materials from specific events. Awards are certificates and notices of honor received by the Altrusa Club of Colorado Springs for their service. Newsletters are the bulletins and mailers that the society sent out to its members. Yearbooks consist of yearly booklets that outlined the club's officers and activities for the year. Lists of club officers and committees were also included in this section because they provide similar information to what is in the Yearbooks for years that no yearbook has been saved. The Photographs series consists of loose photos that were not in albums. There are also photographs of the District 10 conferences under Programs/Meetings and in the scrapbooks. The Scrapbooks contain photographs, clippings, correspondence, and other ephemera. Some of the binders that only contained manuscripts were taken apart and the papers filed by series. Record Albums contain recorded sound items. Artifacts consists of a gavel dated 1958-1959.

Scope and Content

These records were largely unorganized when they were acquuired by the library. Some records were housed in binders, but they were removed and put in archival folders for preservation purposes. The materials were then broken into series (listed below). In some cases, such as the minutes, the materials were housed in their original order because they were housed next to other documents (called attachments below) that seemed to be related. In certain series, like Minutes/Reports and Yearbooks, the materials were arranged chronologically because a year was known for most items. In other series, such as Administrative and Programs/Meetings, materials were housed alphabetically because some materials did not have a year or they were relevant throughout the club's history.
