The materials start in 1944 and are being donated on an ongoing basis, but there are some gaps.

History

The Colorado Springs Mineralogical Society is an incorporated, non-profit organization founded in 1936. It is a member of the Rocky Mountain Federation of Mineralogical Societies and the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies.

On November 24, 1936, a group of interested people met at Dr. E. L. Timmons home to form a mineralogical society. The charter members were: Mr. Lazard Cahn, Mrs. E. L. Kernochan, Miss Billie Bennett, Dr. E. L. Timmons, O. A. Reese, R. D. Wilfley, Willard Wulff, H. E. Mathias, George White, Leonard Sutton, Ralph Monell, Willett R. Willis, Cecil Graves, William E. Davis, Sigfrid Gross, Arthur Roe, Frank Young, and Edwin Over.

The society conducts monthly meetings, takes field trips, and hosts an annual gem and mineral show.

Scope and Content

The materials in this collection for the most part were not in any order when they came to the Pikes Peak Library District. For this reason, they have been divided into series by type.

Series I: Society Records consists of administrative materials that show the essential functions of the organization. The financial records have been organized in chronological order. The minutes are divided by type and then by date. The reports are also organized chronologically.

Series II: Members is organized alphabetically. The categories which include many folders, such as the Membership Lists, are further arranged chronologically.

Series III: Correspondence is arranged by type and then by date.

Series IV: Publicity/Newsletters is organized alphabetically by type and then by date. The Society newsletter, "Pick and Pack" (and formerly "Pick and Pan Reporter,") is included in this series.

Series V: Awards/Programs is arranged alphabetically by type.

Undated materials in Series VI: Gem and Mineral Show are arranged alphabetically by type. The dated materials are arranged chronologically. Each folder is labeled with both the date of the show and it's rank in comparison to other shows. For instance materials from the first show are labelled both 1964 and 1st annual.

Series VII: Ephemera is arranged alphabetically by type.

Series VIII: Scrapbooks are arranged chronologically.

Undated materials in Series IX: American Federation of Mineralogical Societies are arranged alphabetically. Dated materials are arranged chronologically.

Undated materials in Series X: Colorado Federation of Gem and Mineralogical Societies are arranged alphabetically. Dated materials are arranged chronologically.

Materials inSeries XI: Eastern Federation of Mineralogical and Lapidary Societies are arranged chronologically.

Undated materials in Series XII: Rocky Mountain Federation of Mineralogical Societies are arranged alphabetically. Dated materials are arranged chronologically.

Series XIII: Plaques/Signs includes framed materials from the collection.
