Abstract |
The Imperial Hotel/Imperial Players papers consist of approximately 15 cubic feet of materials, covering primarily the years 1948-1996. The vast majority of the material deals with the plays as produced at the Hotel, and includes photographs, notes, scripts (in various forms), programs, clippings and publicity for the Hotel and the Players. Supporting material includes sheet music, audiotapes and records, and costume and set sketches. Dorothy Mackin's input into the Players is shown by her notes on scripts and sets and various correspondence. |

The Imperial Hotel was built in 1896, during the heyday of the Cripple Creek gold rush. It was an elegant building, originally named the Collins Hotel after the proprietor, Mrs. E.F. Collins, and boasted such luxuries as steam heat and baths and electric lights. It catered to newly-rich miners and gamblers as well as businessmen, geologists and potential investors.
The history of Cripple Creek includes many upswings and downturns. The hotel passed through several hands, eventually ending up in 1905 with Mr. and Mrs. George Long, British subjects living in Denver. They changed the name of the hotel to The Imperial Hotel, and managed to keep it through the economic chaos of two world wars, the closing of the mines and the virtual death of the town. Mr. Long died in 1925, but his widow kept the hotel open as long as possible. In 1944, she closed the hotel for good and returned to Denver.
In 1946, a young newlywed couple, Dorothy and Wayne Mackin, bought the Imperial Hotel, and reopened the hotel dining room which had been closed since 1925.
The first season was a moderate success, creating a local reputation for good food and hospitality. At the request of the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce for entertainment for a national convention in 1947, the Mackins contracted with a young actors group from Central City, the Piper Players, for two performances of a melodrama. The success of this venture led to the Players performing full summer seasons of melodrama at the Hotel in 1948 and 1949. In 1950, the Mackins began producing their own plays. That year, they also obtained the services of Max Morath, whose piano playing added a new dimension to the shows.
Using young actors from local theater groups across the west, they built up an impressive cast and crew which over the years has included such popular actors and singers as Craig T. Nelson, Tom Paxton, Johnny Horton, Waltons' co-star Ronnie Claire Edwards, Alan Fudge and Arlen Dean Snyder. Local artist Herman Raymond painted scenery and backdrops, and musicians such as Max Morath, and Felix Cavilleri performed.
Dorothy Mackin adapted nineteenth-century novels and little-known plays as well as writing original plays for the Players to perform.
In 1990, Colorado passed a law allowing limited stakes gambling in three old Colorado mining towns, including Cripple Creek. The influx of money and a new form of tourism was good for the economy of the once-ghost town, but these visitors were not nearly as interested in melodramas on stage as they were in the real-life melodrama of gambling. In 1992, Dorothy and Wayne Mackin sold the Imperial Hotel, which became the Imperial Hotel and Casino, and retired.
Dorothy Mackin died in March, 1996. Later that year, the Cripple Creek District Museum opened a series of rooms dedicated to the Mackins, showing the history of the Imperial Hotel.

The papers are divided into seven series.
Series 1, Scripts, includes play scripts (all copyrighted by Dorothy Mackin except as noted), master scripts (scripts with notes as produced), and miscellaneous scripts, including mimeos and typescripts of plays as produced. These include stage manager's scripts (containing notes, thumbnail sketches, music, etc.) and Dorothy Mackin's copy of "In Old New York" with cue sheets, notes and music. This series also includes books of published plays which were being considered by Mrs. Mackin and her "play notebook" with notes on various plays under consideration.
Master Scripts are available for 1958-1981, except for 1963, 1979 and 1980.
Series 2, Design, covers costume and set design. It consists of one box with costume sketches, some with attached fabric, and several set sketches (including one by Herman Raymond from 1958).
Series 3, Music, includes sheet music and books of music, mostly for the olios. Audiotapes and LPs of both the shows and the music alone are in Series 4, Audiovisual.
Series 4, Audiovisual, includes music audiotapes (both cassette and reel-to-reel), LPs, and videotapes. Audiotapes include music, shows, and miscellaneous tracks for olio ideas or auditions. A separate subseries, Danny Griffith, includes the master tapes and LPs featuring Danny Griffith (ca. 1968-1984).
Many of the tapes had not been properly rewound or stored and may be damaged.
The collection includes several videotapes of performances; four of these videos, including 3 filmed by Steve Antonuccio in 1993, were returned to Wayne Mackin in August of 1994.
Series 5, Papers, is a rather broad series that contains mostly publicity material. The largest portion of this series consists of the play files: files gathered each year about the performance. These files may include snapshots of performances, articles and clippings, and some correspondence. Play files exist for all plays from 1948-1990 except for 1979, 1986, and 1987.
This series also includes some publicity photographs, mostly of the Hotel itself. The majority of the photos of performers and performances, except those included in the play files, have been transferred to the Photo Archives.
Other material in this series includes information on the production staff, and some miscellaneous brochures, articles and clippings about the Hotel and the Players. A book, America's Best 100, (published 1980), which includes a listing of the Imperial Hotel as America's best melodrama, is also included.
Series 6, Mackin Family, is the least complete of the series. It contains only a typescript of Dorothy Mackin's journal, Jeffrey Mackin's birth announcement (1956) and Dorothy's funeral service in 1996.
Series 7, Printed Matter, includes programs and posters for the plays at the Hotel. Programs run from 1953-1992 (except for 1973), and also include a subseries of programs from other theaters: several from the Colorado Springs Opera House, 1901-1903, and one from the Tabor Grand Opera House, 1905. There is also one file of playbills (cast listings, one folded sheet) for 1949-1967.
Posters cover the years 1956-1993, with many missing issues. They are oversize and are stored on the top shelf.
