Abstract |
Personal papers of Colorado historian and author Marshall Sprague. The bulk of this collection dates from the 1930s to the 1980s and includes diaries, research files, writings and autobiographical audiotapes. Correspondence in this collection primarily consists of letters between Sprague and his editors, people commenting on his writings, and other Colorado and Western history authors, though there is also some personal correspondence. The materials in this collection largely document Sprague's professional career as a writer, though his hobbies such as chess, bird watching, and playing jazz piano are readily apparent, as is his obvious affection for his wife, Edna Jane. |

Marshall Sprague was born in Newark, Ohio, in 1909 to Joseph Taylor Sprague and Della Grace Cochran Sprague. Influenced by the local celebrity of his aunt, Mary Aplin Sprague, who had published a book in 1888, Marshall decided early in life that he wanted to be a writer. He wrote for the newspaper and magazine at his prep school, Lawrenceville, and in 1930 he graduated from Princeton with a degree in English. During his years at Princeton, Sprague also developed an interest in jazz and he played piano in a jazz band known as the "Tiger Cubs." This interest would continue as a hobby throughout his lifetime, and in Colorado Springs Sprague played jazz piano in a local band called "The Gut Bucket Seven" until the 1970s.
In 1933, Sprague moved to Tientsin, China, where his sister, Josie, and her husband were living. Almost immediately he had a job as a local story reporter on the North China Star, an American newspaper. After about a year in China he moved to Paris and got a job with the Paris Herald where, among other things, he interviewed and wrote about celebrities. Early in 1936, Marshall returned to New York to be near his mother and sister and found work writing stories for the Sunday department of the New York Times.
In 1929, Marshall Sprague met Edna Jane (EJ) Ailes, and they dated throughout his time at Princeton. They were reunited in 1937 and married in February of 1939. Their first son, Joseph, was born that December. At this same time, Marshall was suffering from increasing fatigue, weight loss and fevers which worsened over the next year. After seeing several doctors he was finally diagnosed with tuberculosis and in early 1941 he became a patient of Dr. Gerald Webb at Glockner Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Sprague's recovery took from 1941 to 1943, the first six months of which he spent at the hospital. In 1943 his first book was published, The Business of Getting Well, based on his experiences during more than a year of bed rest and inactivity. By this time Marshall and EJ had decided to make Colorado Springs their permanent home. When he felt well enough, Sprague got a job with the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, where he worked until suffering a relapse of tuberculosis in 1948. It was after his second recovery that he set to work writing a book about the history of Cripple Creek, and in 1953 Money Mountain was published.
Though he continued to submit occasional articles to magazines and to the New York Times,Money Mountain had started Sprague on a career of writing about Western American history and especially Colorado history, with EJ assisting as first editor and critic. In 1957Massacre: The Tragedy at White River was published, followed by Newport in the Rockies: The Life and Good Times of Colorado Springs in 1961. Several other books of local and regional interest followed, including So Vast, So Beautiful a Land about the Louisiana Purchase, which both Marshall and EJ felt was his best book, and Sometimes I'm Happy, an autobiography principally covering the first half of Sprague's life which was published posthumously in 1995.
Marshall Sprague continued to live and work in Colorado Springs until his death in September of 1994. He was survived by his wife, Edna Jane, sons Joseph and Stephen, and daughter Sharon.

Though records in this collection date from 1825 (ledger book belonging to Sprague's grandfather) to 1994 (Sprague's funeral program), the bulk of the materials date from the 1930s to the 1980s. This collection includes correspondence, diaries, articles, speeches, clipping books, research files, and audiotapes created by or collected by Colorado author Marshall Sprague. The collection is particularly strong in its documentation of Sprague's professional development and life as a writer, first for newspapers and magazines and later as an author of Colorado and Western American history. There are relatively few personal papers in the collection and with the exception of letters to Marshall from the early 1940s, the Sprague Papers lack any records created by or belonging to his wife, Edna Jane, though Sprague occasionally mentions his family, and especially his wife, in his correspondence.
The Correspondence series contains letters written by and received by Marshall Sprague. Though separated by Sprague into "Writing," "General," or "Personal" correspondence, subjects often overlap the categories and the same correspondents often appear in each of the subseries. Correspondents include his agent Carl Brandt, editor Ned Bradford from Little, Brown and Co., and Alan Swallow from Swallow Press. Among the authors who corresponded with Sprague are David Lavender, Lowell Thomas, Caroline Bancroft, Lucius Beebe, Frank Waters, J. Frank Dobie, John Lipsey and Joseph Verner Reed. In the 1930s there are letters of encouragement from Hugh McNair Kahler. Correspondence with John Bonforte in the 1970s gives insight into Sprague's political opinions, and in the 1980s Sprague corresponds frequently with Kingsley Hubby and fellow Lawrenceville classmates. Correspondence, usually relating to Sprague's books, can also be found in the Publications subseries of the Research Files series.
Sprague's Diaries contain short entries summarizing the activities of his day. The medical diary includes a chart tracking Sprague's weight and temperature as he battled tuberculosis. The Articles series includes copies of newspaper and magazine articles Sprague wrote, as well as articles written about him and his publications. The Original Magazines subseries contains original copies of magazines in which Sprague articles appeared, though often the articles themselves appear elsewhere in the collection. The Talks series includes speeches, often about local history, given by Sprague before local organizations and conference attendees, as well as lectures about his methods as a writer.
The Research Files consist of materials gathered by Sprague during the course of researching and writing his many articles and books. The Publications subseries, further divided by book title, includes research notes and materials, correspondence, rough drafts and other items related to specific publications. Files within the Sometimes I'm Happy section include a great deal of information about Sprague's early life. Specifically, this section includes early writings, a diary of his passage by ship to Tientsin, China, and early correspondence. Sometimes I'm Happy also includes the outlines for the autobiography audiotapes Sprague dictated to his typist. Sprague served as editor for Farrington Reed Carpenter's Confessions of a Maverick and that section includes a rough draft of the book. The Subject Files subseries consists of materials maintained by Sprague in individual file folders and which may or may not have been used for specific works. Of particular interest in this subseries are the large number of files relating to the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center and the history of the Cheyenne Mountain Country Club. The Jazz subseries exists separate of the other two because they were maintained by Sprague like those from the Publications subseries, and yet he does not appear to have written any works about jazz.
The Uncorrected Proof of A Gallery of Dudes was given to the library by Sprague in 1992 and was added to the rest of the materials in this collection during processing. Audiotapes include dictations by Sprague for Sometimes I'm Happy, which was typed by Barbara Neilon, recordings of song birds, recordings of jazz, an interview with William B. Tutt, and miscellaneous tapes. Publications include original magazines in which Sprague's articles appeared and selected published materials owned by Sprague useful for background research or exhibits. Ephemera and Awards includes pins separated from the Jazz series and a few framed recognitions.
Photographs have been separated from the Marshall Sprague Papers and have been placed within the Photo Archives of the Pikes Peak Library District. Several of Sprague's manuscripts and a number of his research files are located at Colorado College's Special Collections.
