Correspondence in this series covers the years 1917-1924 and is divided, by year, into general correspondence and correspondence to and from the American Unitarian Association, mostly dealing with funding. Box 1: Series I, subseries 1 (minute books) Box 2: Series I, subseries 1 (minute books) Box 3: Series I, subseries 1 (minute books) Box 4: Series I, subseries 1 (minutes), Series I, subseries 2 (official papers), Series I, subseries 3 (correspondence) Series II: Financial This series contains accounts and financial planning for the church between the years 1892 and 1978. There is virtually no material available for the 1930s and 1940s, and only scattered material from the 1920s and 1950s. The series is further broken into several subseries: Accounts includes account journals and ledger sheets (mostly from the 1960s and 70s). Bank records contain bank books and statements from scattered years. Accounts receivable will show what moneys were received by the church, and include deposit slips, accounts of collections and deposits, and pledge receipts (mostly ca 1892-1923); and accounts payable show what was paid out by the church, and contain cancelled checks, bills and vouchers (mostly 1893-1894). Secretary's and treasurer's reports are accounts of all financial activities of the church during the year, and were generally given to the board or membership. This collection contains no treasurer's reports between 1930 and 1955. Budgets and goals are the church's financial planning, and include both proposed and approved budgets for the years 1956-1979. Three other subseries, correspondence, pledges, finance drives and taxes are relatively small. The tax subseries contains W-2 forms for church employees for the years 1964-1967, and is not available to the public. Box 5: Series II, subseries 1 (accounts) Box 6: Series II, subseries 1 (accounts) Box 7: Series II, subseries 1 (accounts) Box 8: Series II, subseries 2 (bank records), Series II, subseries 3 (accounts receivable) Box 9: Series II, subseries 4 (accounts payable) Box 10: Series II, subseries 5 (secretary / treasurer's reports) Box 11: Series II, subseries 6 (budgets and goals), Series II, subseries 7 (correspondence), Series II, subseries 8 (pledges and finance drives), Series II, subseries 9 (taxes) [Closed Records] Series III: Church Histories The church histories series contains overviews of the church: written histories by members (both published and not) and scrapbooks showing church events over a number of years. The scrapbooks cover the years 1950-1981. In addition, some items of church ephemera (stationery and calling cards) are included in Box 12. Box 12: Series III, subseries 1 (histories) Box 13: Series III, subseries 2 (scrapbooks) Series IV: Ministers The first Box of this series includes miscellaneous information about all of the ministers of All Souls, arranged chronologically. Information varies for each individual, and may include photographs, correspondence, biographical information, news articles, etc. Also included are booklets, documents and correspondence from the three minister searches conducted by the church in 1959, 1964 ,1979, and1998. Appendix II contains a chronological list of all ministers at All Souls Unitarian Church from 1890-1990. Rev. Hurley Begun's papers make up subseries 2. Since he was minister for the longest time of any in their history, many of his personal papers were saved, as well as his sermons. His papers are kept in approximately the order he kept his files, with his file names whenever they were marked. Printed sermons are arranged alphabetically by title. The collection also contains three Boxes of manuscript sermons; these sermons are written on sheets of small, lined looseleaf notebook paper and clipped together with paperclips. The first Box covers funeral sermons of Rev. Begun. There are two groups of these sermons: one group of loose papers, arranged alphabetically by name; the other, removed from a small notebook for preservation purposes, including both loose and bound pages. This group is kept in the original order; Appendix III includes an index to names (both alphabetical and original order). The second and third Boxes contain general sermons and notes. The pagination is inconsistent: some pages are numbered, others are not, and the numbering is not necessarily consecutive; some pages are labeled with titles (which sometimes change from page to page). These pages have been kept in the order received, with no attempt to recreate the order in which they were written. Pages were originally tied together as packets, and these packets have been placed into acid-free folders. Box 14: Series IV, subseries 1 (ministers) Box 15: Series IV, subseries 2 (Hurley Begun -- papers) Box 16: Series IV, subseries 2 (Hurley Begun -- papers), Series IV, subseries 2 (Hurley Begun--sermons, printed) Box 17: Series IV, subseries 2 (Hurley Begun -- funeral sermons, manuscript) Box 18: Series IV, subseries 2 (Hurley Begun -- sermons, manuscript) Box 19: Series IV, subseries 2 (Hurley Begun -- sermons, manuscript) Series V: Building and Grounds The building and grounds series consists of two Boxes, divided into 4 subseries. Most of the papers in this series are from the time periods when the building and grounds committees were most active: 1893, with accounts and costs of the original building, 1921 and 1925, with fundraising activities, and two periods of repair and restoration: the mid-1960s and mid-1970s. The Planning subseries includes committee reports for various years, long-range planning and historic preservation planning, and correspondence dealing with the church grounds and property. Repairs contains specifications, bids, bills and correspondence regarding repairs and/or purchases for the building. The third subseries, Financing, overlaps Series II somewhat, but is limited to costs, pledges, loans, and fundraising specifically for the building and grounds fund. The final subseries contains Blueprints for the building, mostly from the restoration plans of the mid-1970s. Box 20: Series V, subseries 1 (planning), Series V, subseries 2 (building and repairs), Series V, subseries 3 (finance) Box 36: Series V, subseries 4 (blueprints) Series VI: Members / Membership This series contains primarily membership information, including membership lists and directories. Box 22 contains a card index of names and addresses of members from 1892-1978, and may not be available to the general public. Printed membership lists and directories cover the years 1955-1978 (though not complete). In addition, the membership / record book in Box 24 contains a handwritten list of marriages, funerals and christenings performed during the years 1891-1915 and 1924-1967. A surname index to the book is available in Box 23, subseries 4. Subseries 1 contains minutes of the membership meetings as well as committee and annual reports to the members, mostly from the early 1970s. Subseries 2 and 3 contain membership lists, directories and books. Subseries 4 and 5 contain information on specific members: photographs, memorial services, indexes to early Unitarian events and people in the Gazette Telegraph, and the surname index to the membership book in series 3, listing book signings, funerals, marriages and christenings. Subseries 5 consists of newspaper clippings of members of All Souls Unitarian Church, mostly from 1968-1971. These are arranged chronologically. Box 21: Series VI, subseries 1 (membership minutes) Box 22: Series VI, subseries 2 (membership lists and directories) Box 23: Series VI, subseries 2 (membership lists and directories), Series VI, subseries 4 (members), Series VI, subseries 5 (newspaper clippings (members) Box 24: Series VI, subseries 3 (record / membership books) Series VII: Church Activities and Programs This series covers activities of the church, including committees and clubs, the church school and library, specific events and programs (both one-time and annual) and the rules and regulations regarding these programs. Also included is the publicity relating to these activities, both press releases and the articles as they appeared in the local paper, arranged chronologically. The majority of this series is from the 1960s, with occasional earlier material scattered throughout, and most of the newspaper clippings from the 1970s. The subseries follow those of the church papers closely, and include minute books of the board, annual reports, histories, finances, membership lists, program and committee reports, and a file of Beverly (Mrs. Tom) Kinraide, Women's Alliance President, 1974. The minute books contain the most complete information, and cover the years 1891-1981. The rest of the material covers only scattered years, often skipping entire decades. During that time, they kept their records of minutes, finances, correspondence, etc. as a separate entity. This series contains all the records of the Community Church from its separation from to its reunification with All Souls.
