Lazard Cahn was born in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1865. During his school years his family lived in New York, and Lazard studied for two years in Germany. Though planning to attend Yale to study chemistry, a sister's illness brought Cahn to Colorado Springs in the 1880s and the town remained his home, despite extensive traveling, until his death in 1940.
At some point after moving to Colorado Springs, Cahn became interested in the chemical constitution of some rare minerals found at St. Peter's Dome, a rock formation not far from the town. This interest led him to the study of mineralogy and crystallography. By 1896 Cahn was a well-known mineral collector and dealer and was traveling extensively in the United States, Mexico and Europe. A 1921 article in the Colorado Springs Gazette referred to Cahn as "the greatest crystallographer in the United States" and his expert advice was sought by miners, gem dealers and curators of mineral collections. The mineral cahnite was named after Lazard Cahn by Charles Palache of Harvard University.
Cahn was particularly interested in crystallized minerals and compiled an extensive collection of almost 5000 micromounts. This collection was purchased following Lazard Cahn's death by Mrs. Edward L. Kernochan, who had studied mineralogy with him. In 1958 Mrs. Kernochan donated the collection to Yale University.
Cahn often worked with individuals who were interested in minerals and for many years he conducted a series of informal classes in mineralogy. He was generous with his time and knowledge, and gave each of his students hundreds of micromounts for their own collections. An article in the Evening Telegraph noted that Cahn "was largely responsible for the growth of micromounting in Colorado Springs, which became one of the leading centers for that subject."
Lazard Cahn died in Colorado Springs in May of 1940, one day short of his seventy-sixth birthday. He had never married and was survived by a sister, Nellie, next to whom he is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Colorado Springs under a tombstone in the shape of an idealized cahnite.

This collection has been divided into six series, the first and most extensive of which is the Correspondence Series. Correspondence has been arranged alphabetically by correspondent. Also included are records concerning Lazard Cahn's mineral collection, information about other mineral collections, an article written by Cahn, and a scrapbook compiled by Mrs. E. L. Kernochan containing a few photographs of Cahn.
