Scope and ContentThe Colorado Springs Company Records consist of twenty-five bound volumes of records, roughly covering the years 1866-1977, and including minute books, deed books, stock certificate books and journals and ledgers of the Colorado Springs Company and affiliated companies such as the Antlers Hotel and National Land and Improvement Company. All the books are water-damaged . Some are badly mildewed and foxed, some parts are illegible (or nearly so) due to water damage and ink bleeding, and some have spines or covers badly damaged or missing. Major damage is noted in the inventory for individual books. The records are incomplete. Journal numbers 1, 2, 3, and 9 are missing; the minute books only go as far as 1941, and other records are incomplete. There are also loose pages inserted in many of the books; these have been left in their original order. The collection may be broken down into types of records. Minute Books (1866-1941) are the earliest of the records and include minutes from the National Land and Improvement Company (the precursor to the Colorado Springs Company) from its inception in Philadelphia in 1866, as well as the original incorporation minutes of the Colorado Springs Company in 1871. There are three bound volumes in this group - The National Land and Improvement Company (1866-1883), The Colorado Springs Company (1871-1941), and the Antlers Hotel (1903-1937). The Stock Books and Ledgers (1872-1956) group contains four books of stock certificates and three stock ledgers. Stock certificate books may contain the certificate, which gives information about the purchaser, stamps, and cancellation notices or stubs where certificates have been removed. Three books are from the Colorado Springs Company and one is from the Antlers Livery and Taxi-Cab Company. There are also several loose certificates for the Colorado Springs Touring and Taxi-Cab Company. The stock ledger books (two from the Colorado Springs Company and one from the Antlers Hotel) show share registration and transfers, both alphabetically and by certificate number. Deed Books include five deed books from 1873 to 1924, generally showing purchasers of land from the Colorado Springs Company, and are the most badly damaged and difficult to read materials in the collection. The first book, running from 1873 to 1882, had been marked for microfilming with notes clipped to the pages. This book also includes lists of stockholders, and handwritten copies of legal papers such as indentures and depositions relating to the company. The majority of the material in these books consists of letterpress copies (on tissue paper) of the filled-in spaces in legal deeds, usually in badly faded ink. Most are badly water damaged and nearly illegible. The majority of the journals and ledgers in the Journals / Account Books (1871-1956) group contain the daily accounts of the Colorado Springs Company, including its investments and expenses. Miscellaneous journals include a trust ledger with accounts for William J. Palmer's daughters from 1887 until 1909, and the cash book of the Land Department of the Colorado Springs Company, 1929-1951. RestrictionsAccess RestrictionsThe collection is open for research.
