History

Ruth Banning and Raymond W. "Pinkey" Lewis were married in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in September of 1921. Raymond was a cattle owner with property in Fowler and had graduated from Colorado College in 1914, where he was well-known for his athletic achievements. Ruth, a Colorado Springs native and 1915 graduate of Wellesley College, was the owner and operator of the Union Ice and Coal Company and the Banning Ranch, having taken over these businesses after the death of her parents and her brother.

In January of 1922, Ruth Banning Lewis purchased ten prize-winning heifers from the National Western Stock Show in Denver. In 1924 she sold her ice and coal businesses to devote more time to cattle ranching, entering into a business partnership with her husband they called the Banning-Lewis Ranches. By 1927, Ruth and Raymond had moved their operation from the old Banning Ranch to property about ten miles east of Colorado Springs. During the next several years the Lewis' purchased numerous surrounding properties, eventually acquiring over 30,000 acres.

The Lewis' were winning awards for their new line of registered Herefords by the mid 1920s. Banning-Lewis Ranches had the champion bull, Prince Domino 101st, at the American Hereford Association's Golden Jubilee Show in Kansas City in 1932 and at the Denver Western Stock Show in 1933. The Banning-Lewis line was known as Colorado Domino Type Herefords, and ranch owners from throughout the states and as far away as Hawaii and Mexico purchased Banning-Lewis cattle for their own breeding programs. The Lewis' also raised Thoroughbred horses at their ranch. Raymond Lewis played polo and participated in the War Department's Remount Horse Breeding Plan. Beginning in the 1930s the Lewis' were also involved in the Soil Conservation program. The Banning-Lewis Ranches had one of the most extensive and varied soil conservation practices of any ranch in the United States and in 1948 won the Colorado Soil Conservation program award.

Ruth Banning Lewis was the first woman elected to the board of the National American Hereford Association and she also served on the boards of several Colorado Springs organizations. She was one of the founding members of the Girl Scouts Council in Colorado Springs, was an organizer of the Pikes Peak Chapter of the American Red Cross Volunteer Nurse's Aid Corps, and was on the board of the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, the Drama League, and the Visiting Nurse's Association. In 1923, Ruth was elected to the Board of Education for District 11 and served as its president from 1927 until her resignation in 1934 and from 1943 to 1947 she served on the Colorado Springs City Council.

In 1958 Ruth and Raymond Lewis sold their home on Nevada Avenue and took up permanent residence at the Broadmoor Hotel. Ruth Banning Lewis died there on November 19, 1962, following an extended illness. In 1967 Raymond married Carla Dines, widow of Thomas M. Dines, a Colorado Springs area business man and ranch owner. The Dines' had three sons, Lee, Thomas Jr. and Anselm. Raymond Lewis died in Colorado Springs on May 27, 1978. Carla Lewis later married Eugene H. Adams and lived for a time in Hawaii. She died March 19, 1994, in El Paso County. The Dines family still own several hundred acres of the original Banning-Lewis property.

In 1962 Raymond Lewis had sold 15,000 acres of Banning-Lewis Ranches property to the Steagall Corporation, with an option to purchase most of the rest of the ranch. Lawrence and Steagall defaulted on their loan and U.S. Steel Corporation took over ownership of the property, exercising the option to purchase the rest of the ranch following Raymond's death in 1979. By 1987 Mobil Oil owned the property and sold 23,000 acres to Aries Development, who called the property the Banning-Lewis Ranch. This land was annexed by the city of Colorado Springs in 1988. When Aries defaulted on his loans, the Resolution Trust Company took over ownership and the property has changed hands several times since.

Arrangement

This collection has been arranged into three record groups. Record group I has been further divided into series and subseries according to broad subject matter. Within subseries, the original order of folders has largely been retained, and is reflected in the various filing schemes. Where no order was apparent, the files were arranged alphabetically then chronologically. All photographs from this collection were transferred to the Photo Archives. Newspaper clippings were photocopied onto acid-free paper. The majority of published materials, including several books, that were a part of this collection have been transferred to the published material of Special Collections.

Scope and Content

This collection has been divided into three record groups. Record group I (1884-1988), by far the largest group, contains materials related to Ruth Banning Lewis and Raymond Lewis and their business, the Banning-Lewis Ranches. Record group II (1950-1992) contains materials related to Raymond Lewis' second wife, Carla Dines, and her family. Record group III (1980-2001) contains materials related to purchases and plans to develop the property once owned by the Lewis' and now known as the Banning-Lewis Ranch.

Record group I - Ruth Banning Lewis and Raymond Lewis / Banning-Lewis Ranches - has been divided into five series. Series I, Banning-Lewis Ranches History, consists of a single folder of clippings and articles about Ruth and Raymond Lewis and their registered Hereford operation. Series II, Raymond W. Lewis, is a single folder of Raymond Lewis' personal documents, including clippings about his parents.

Series III, Ruth Banning Lewis, contains her personal papers and documents. This series has been divided into six subseries. Subseries 1 includes Ruth's father's business records and documents concerning her brother. Subseries 2 is a run of clippings about the personal and business activities of both Ruth and Raymond, and includes annual programs from the Broadmoor Polo Association as well as information about the Lewis' early ventures into raising Herefords. Subseries 3 is a clipping book of political editorials, primarily from Colorado Springs newspapers. Subseries 4 is a personal correspondence file, originally maintained in an alphabetically divided letterbook. Clippings and correspondence from Ruth's time on the Colorado Springs City Council make up subseries 5, and subseries 6 contains Ruth's personal diaries, many of which are five-year journals and contain only brief entries on each day.

Series IV, Ranching and Livestock, has been divided into subseries by subject matter. Advertising files include samples of Banning-Lewis Ranches journal advertisements and Christmas calendars. Correspondence files contain years worth of letters to and from individuals across the country who were interested in purchasing or learning more about the Banning-Lewis Herefords. The arrangement of these files reflects their original order, so letters from the same correspondent might be found in each of the runs. Financial records include profit and loss statements for the Ranches as well as some general receipts from the 1930s and 1940s. Subject files contain information about the Lewis' cattle and horses, as well as general information about ranching. Cattle sale catalogs and livestock show programs from around the country, largely from the late 1940s and early 1950s, make up the majority of the Publications subseries. The Photograph files primarily contain photos of the Banning-Lewis Herefords and several of these files include breeding information.

Record group II, Carla Dines Lewis, is largely financial information concerning Raymond Lewis' second wife, Carla Dines, her previous husband Thomas Dines, and their three sons. The Dines' owned property in the Black Forest area known as the Pound Sterling Ranch and some files in this record group relate to it. Other files include information about property owned in Florida and Montana.

Record group III, Development Plans, includes published materials, clippings, and correspondence relating to the purchase, and plans for development, of the majority of the property once owned by Ruth and Raymond Lewis and now officially known as the Banning-Lewis Ranch. These records were compiled by Walter Dennis and were given to the library with the rest of the Banning-Lewis Ranches records.
