History

The Colorado Mountain Club was founded in Denver in 1912 with the mission to unite energy, interest and knowledge; collect and disseminate information; stimulate public interest; encourage preservation; and render accessible the mountains of Colorado. The Pikes Peak Group, originally founded in Colorado Springs as the Cheyenne Mountain Club, joined with the Colorado Mountain Club in 1919.

The income the local group gained was first dedicated to the expense of administering the local group, then to publishing literary, scientific, and artistic materials, marking trails and increasing the library and other collections of the group. The club's council comprised a chairman, vice-chairman, secretary, and treasurer which met monthly. The entire club met annually each November, at which time the club would report on the financial status, membership status, and scheduled outings. In the early 1930s the group discussed withdrawing from the affiliation of the Colorado Mountain Club state organization, as membership was declining and the state organization refused to reduce the cost of the membership dues. However, the group ultimately maintained their affiliation with the state organization.

In 1941 the Bylaws allowed for four permanent committees: membership, program, outing, and nature protection. By 1953, the permanent committees consisted of only three: membership, program and entertainment, and the outing committees. Although nature protection was no longer part of the permanent committee structure, the Pikes Peak Group took a stand in the 1950s to oppose the Echo Park Dam in Dinosaur National Monument, even though the state organization's ultimate decision was not to take a stand either way. The Pikes Peak Group continued to administer the local group through membership recruiting, monthly council meetings, hiking outings, and consequently maintaining membership lists, financial reports, newsletters and reports on scheduled hiking trips and outings.

Arrangement

The Collection has been divided into seven series. The first six series comprise the papers of the Pikes Peak Group based upon the organization's activities between 1923 and 2008. Within subseries, folders have been arranged chronologically. The records of the seventh series are the state materials the Pikes Peak Group accumulated as a result of the affiliation with the Colorado Mountain Club state organization and contain records dating from 1926-2008. Folder titles in quotations indicate that the creator's title for the contents was transcribed. Folder titles without quotations indicate the title was assigned during processing.

Scope and Content

The papers of the Pikes Peak Group of the Colorado Mountain Club include Business Records (Series I, 1923-2001), records of its Activities (Series II, 1933-1979), Correspondence (Series III, 1931-1993), Publications of the local group (Series IV, 1954-2008), Ephemera (Series V,1952-1957 and undated ), and Artifacts (Series VI, ca early 1950s-1967), as well as the papers accumulated as a result of its affiliation with its state organization: Colorado Mountain Club State Materials (Series VII, 1926-2008).

The Business Records (Series I) show the administration of the local group. These records include the 1941 Bylaws which specify the date group became affiliated with the Colorado Mountain Club, as well as its financial records, meeting minutes, and membership lists. Activities (Series II) are papers of hiking trips or outings the group planned and upon which they reported. Also included under activities are conservation issues with which the group concerned itself. It is under Activities that correspondence on the Echo Park Dam Controversy within Dinosaur National Monument can be found. Finally, Activities also contain two peak registers: Cameron's Cone, 1933-1940, and Cookstove Mountain 1948-1956. These peak registers were for hikers to sign as they reached the summits of the peaks. The Correspondence (Series III) series is comprised of general correspondence addressing mostly the business of the group such as membership, topics for upcoming meetings, trips or events, climbing school, but also correspondence with the State and National Forest Service on recreational impact in the local area. The subseries within Correspondence contains miscellaneous materials accumulated on hiking equipment, food, and guides from similar clubs in other states. The Publications series (Series IV) are materials that the Pikes Peak Group produced to keep their members informed, such as newsletters and bulletins, but also handbooks on wildlife and mountaineering for purposes of education. Ephemera (Series V) and Artifacts (Series VI) consist of announcements for dinners and talks, and objects such as the auto license plate emblems made for the state organization's 50th anniversary.

The Colorado Mountain Club State Materials (Series VII) include subseries covering general information on the state organization, state board meeting minutes, files of Lester Michel (1953-1965) a Colorado Springs resident who also served as chairman of the Pikes Peak Group, Outing Schedules produced by the state organization which included scheduled outings from local groups statewide, and events announcements. A run of Trail and Timberline magazine from 1922-1989 was removed from this collection during processing because a run exists in Special Collections.
