Biography

Kenneth Englert was born in Lodgepole, Nebraska in 1911 and moved with his family to Colorado Springs in the early 1920s. In 1941 he married Lorene Mae Baker, a Colorado City native. After serving in the Navy during World War II, Englert opened Kenny's Fine Liquors in Colorado Springs, and in 1956 the Englerts built the Lake Center shopping center near Prospect Lake.

The Englerts were both history enthusiasts and together they participated in many activities exploring and celebrating the history of the Pikes Peak region. Kenneth Englert was an avid collector of ephemera and artifacts, including arrowheads, and was a member of the Denver Posse of the Westerners, the Ghost Town Club, and a member and one-time president of the Historical Society of the Pikes Peak Region.

Kenneth and Lorene Englert moved to Salida, Colorado in 1965 and in 1979 they moved to Seal Beach, California. Lorene died in California in July of 1983.

Scope and Content

The material in this collection has been divided into three series. Series I, Personal Papers, includes correspondence to Kenneth Englert concerning participation in various historical organizations, information relevant to his retail liquor store business, and a folder of clippings about Englert. Also in this series are a number of letters from Frank Turner, many mentioning arrow heads found on the Turner Ranch in Garo, Colorado.

Series II, Research Files, includes materials gathered during research for Englert's own papers, which he presented at the Ghost Town Club and Historical Society of the Pikes Peak Region, as well as his papers published by the Denver Posse of the Westerners. Also in the Research Files are papers presented by other members of those groups. Among the 'Archaeology - General' files are papers originally belonging to W. W. Postlethwaite of Colorado College.

Within Series III, Ephemera, are correspondence and ephemera collected by Englert, including postage cancellations and stamps and local items such as coupon books and event tickets. Of particular interest in this series may be the Ruth Miller letter, which mentions diphtheria in the Gunnison area, and the letters from C. C. McReynolds of Troop A, 2nd Regiment, describing conditions at Camp Cuba Libra, Panama Park, Jacksonville, Florida in 1898.
