Biography / History

The Springs Area Beautiful Association was organized by A. Earl Bryson in 1961 as a “citizens’ organization seeking to promote and preserve the natural and manmade beauty of Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak Region.” They held an annual dinner meeting and awarded individuals, businesses, organizations and residences for their efforts in research, landscaping, and restoration and preservation of local buildings and open space.

Scope and Content

Minutes, newsletters, correspondence, reports, clippings, ephemera, case files and an artifact document the Springs Area Beautiful Association’s efforts to preserve the beauty of Colorado Springs from 1963 to 1999. Files may contain information about multiple issues. The assorted material folder includes opposition to development on Mesa road, application to establish a portion of Gold Camp Road for use as a trail, council of neighborhood organizations newsletters, summary of high pollution season, and Memorial Hospital expansion. The speakers bureau file includes a newsletter on the Interstate 25-Briargate Parkway Interchange. The Garden of the Gods folder includes an agreement between the city of Colorado Springs and the Garden of the Gods visitor center.
