Orvis Grout moved to Colorado Springs in 1946 to become the first professional director of the Colorado Springs Civic Theatre, a non-profit community theatre company. Prior to his move he directed college theatre at Kansas State College and during World War II he directed army theatre for the Seventh Service Command. During his years with the Civic Theatre, Theatre membership increased from about 250 people to over 2300. Grout remained with the Civic Theatre until his retirement in 1979.
