HistoryIn 1927, the City of Colorado Springs purchased 640 acres of grassland seven miles east of the city to be used as an airport. In 1929, the Colorado Springs Airport consisted of two gravel runways, at least two hangers, and an administration residence/lounge. By the late 1930’s the airport offered two northbound and two southbound flights. The route went from El Paso, Texas to Pueblo, Colorado Springs, and Denver. The carriers included, Wyoming Air Express, Western Air Service, and Pikes Peak Air Service. In 1938, the airport served only 35 passengers. The City of Colorado Springs built its first municipal terminal in the 1940’s. The field became a military airfield during the months before the United States entered World War II. Today this building is the Peterson Air Force Base Museum. During World War II, the War Services Administration took over the airport and used it to train military pilots. After the war, the airport, except the north end, was given back to the city. The north end became the Peterson Air Force Base in 1948. In 1966, the city decided to stop sharing facilities with the military, and built a terminal on the west-side of the runways. Throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s the terminal was expanded several times. In 1991, the voters of Colorado Springs approved a plan to build a new terminal that could accommodate the number of passengers using the airport. Construction began in 1992 and was completed in 1994. ArrangementThe materials were kept in the original arrangement in which they were found. Most of the correspondence was photocopied onto acid-free paper because it was on thin paper and fading.
