Administrative History

Penrose Hospital

The story of Penrose Hospital starts with a man named Albert Glockner, who came to Colorado Springs from Pennsylvania in search of a cure for tuberculosis. Once in Colorado Springs he met Marie Gwynne and they were married on April 20, 1887. Regretably, Albert did not find a cure and died September 20, 1888. Marie decided to build a sanatorium in memory of her husband so that others in the Colorado Springs community could find a cure at moderate expense. Dr. B. P. Anderson consulted during construction and became the first administrator of the hospital. By July 14, 1889, the Sunday Colorado Springs Gazette announced the arrival of the Glockner Memorial Sanatorium located between Tejon and Cascade. The Albert Glockner Memorial Sanatorium opened March 1890, “intended for the care and treatment of people suffering from diseases of the lung and throat.”

The first few years of Glockner’s operation were not financially successful and Marie needed aid. She turned to the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati to assume ownership of the Glockner Sanatorium in 1893, with Sister Mary Basilia Applegate as the first Sister Superior. The Sisters accepted but continued to have financial difficulties. With debt looming, Sister Rose Alexius called upon the Colorado Springs Community and raised donations through a bazaar. The response was very positive and allowed the sanatorium to remain open. Throughout the years two benefactors allowed the hospital to flourish. Spencer and Julie Penrose’s philanthropic efforts toward the hospital constituted many advances and yielded two name changes.

In fighting his own struggle against cancer, Spencer Penrose saw a need for a treatment center in Colorado Springs. Construction began on the Penrose Tumor Clinic in 1939 with funding from Spencer and Julie Penrose and leadership from Dr. Henri Coutard. Spencer Penrose died before the hospital was finished. Yet, Dr. William McCrossin, Spencer’s personal physician, advised his wife throughout the remaining construction. The Penrose Cancer Center Pavilion was officially dedicated in 1941. In 1947, at the request of Mrs. Glockner, the name of the hospital changed from Glockner Hospital to Glockner-Penrose Hospital in recognition of their donation.

Another significant donation came from Mrs. Verner Z. Reed in the same year as the dedication of the Penrose Cancer Center Pavilion. In memory of her daughter, Margery Reed Mayo, a new nurses residence was erected. Margery had attended the nursing school during World War I and saw a need for improved dormitories.

Julie Penrose continued her generosity toward the hospital when in 1959 she donated over three million dollars to fund a 12-level bed tower addition. With the new structure came a new name: Penrose Hospital, at the request of Mrs. Glockner.

In 1987 a large shift came to health care in Colorado Springs. Both Penrose Hospital and St. Francis Hospital signed an agreement, supported by the Sisters of Charity and the Sisters of St. Francis, to consolidate the two hospitals forming: Penrose-St. Francis Hospital. By 1995 a nonprofit statewide health system known as Centura Health was formed.

Penrose hospital has supported a nursing program throughout most of its history. The nursing program at Glockner started in 1903 with the Nurses Training School. The Seton School of Nursing started in 1932 when the Glockner sanatorium nursing program amalgamated with programs from St. Mary Hospital in Pueblo, Colorado and Mt. San Raphael Hospital in Trinidad, Colorado.

St. Francis Hospital

St. Francis Hospital was the first hospital in Colorado Springs, founded in 1887 by B. P. Anderson. Anderson was a physician for the Midland Railroad Company. He started treating injured railroad workers out of two adobe houses on Huerfano Street. In need of aid, he turned to the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration. Four sisters, Sister M. Huberta Superior, Sister M. Kunigunda, Sister M. Notburga and Sister M. Sylveria, were sent from the Motherhouse in Lafayette, Indiana, in 1877. The Sisters arrived in Colorado Springs without an adequate building to treat patients. They started treating patients out of the house that B. P. Anderson used, but quickly realized the need for new accommodations. Funding for the hospital came from the Sisters relentless efforts to secure donations from individuals in the community. By 1887 they had enough money to construct a hospital and were able to open the doors in 1888.

The hospital adjusted to the growing population and needs of the community. Additions to the building were made in 1895, 1897, 1898, and 1903 to accommodate growth. The hospital responded to the growing influx of tuberculosis patients in 1929 by building a sanitarium. Additional improvements included a new chapel in 1916 and an emergency room in 1940. In 1950 the original St. Francis Hospital on Pikes Peak Avenue was razed.

The first Nurses Training School was established in 1919 with the first class graduation in 1922 under the supervision of Sister M. Edelberta. The nursing school eventually transferred to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Denver in 1936.

Scope and Content

Minutes, annual reports, subject files, admission records, correspondence, blue prints, clippings, ephemera, financial documentation, legal documentation, scrapbooks, creative works, publications, artifacts and electronic media document the history of two hospitals: Penrose Hospital and St. Francis Hospital from 1887-2001 in Colorado Springs. This collection has two record groups Penrose Hospital and St. Francis Hospital, which reflect two separate offices of origin. The third record group contains information about other hospitals in the United States. The bulk of the collection pertains to the Penrose record group. This collection has been arranged chronologically according to the separate hospital entities throughout the years. Many files are arranged into a history subseries because they contain historical sketches, written by individuals. Many of these writings contradict each other.

A student from Colorado College inventoried the material while they were still housed at the hospital. Each folder has a handwritten record that was kept in binders. The binders are available in the collection. These records were recorded into a Microsoft Access database, which became corrupt. However, a print out from the database is available. The student also assigned each folder a number. This number was transferred onto the acid-free folders to trace back the file folders.

Record Group I: Penrose Hospital

Series I: Glockner Sanatorium and Hospital

Chancery correspondence covers the topics of chaplain’s salary, Sister Rose Alexis, and the Margery Reed Nurses Home. Some material is in Latin. The letters to the editor of the Gazette discuss financial matters of the hospital and a description of the sanatorium and nurses. Mother Blanch discusses the Sisters of St. Francis. Sister Rose’s letter discusses a possible bazaar and a new elevator.

Glockner “Historical Sketches” has one photo that is marked due to possible inadequacy. The folder includes maps of the location of the hospital, photocopies of photographs, floor plans, photographs of Pikes Peak from the hospital grounds and Sacred Heart Chapel, and a narrative on administrative history. Other topics include Sacred Heart Chapel, Cancer Research Building, parking, ambulatory care center. The second folder in this subseries, “History of the Glockner Sanatorium and Hospital” includes written narratives with timelines in some cases. The author of these historical summaries is not known. Also included is a summary of Glockner-Penrose hospital.

Admission statistics include the total number of patients admitted for inclusive dates and whether the diagnosis was for tuberculosis, surgery, medicine, obstetrics, or identified as another diagnosis. A patient admission book is closed until 2018.

The scrapbooks in the Glockner series are labeled book #1 and book #2. The topics go beyond the time period of Glockner hospital including Margery Reed Memorial, Penrose Tumor Institute, Penrose Pavillion, Nutrition Camp, Holy Rosary Chapel at Cascade, Seton School of Nursing, and a Spencer Penrose Statue. Both of these scrapbooks include a list of contents located in the front.
