Biography / History

Composer, Jean W. Miller was born July 31, 1916 in Holly, Colorado. In 1935 she moved to Colorado Springs with her parents Robert Newton Miller and Julia Voss Miller. She attended the San Luis Private School for Girls in Colorado Springs, Colorado Women's College in Denver, University of Colorado, and the Julliard School of Music in New York. She studied under Arnold Schoenberg, Roger Sessions, Nicholas Slonimsky, Bernard Wagenaar and Nadia Boulanger.

Her compositions have been performed by the Drake Civic Symphony in Des Moines, Iowa; American Chamber Music Ensemble in New York City; United States Air Force Academy Concert Band and on several radio broadcasts.

She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Pikes Peak Group of the Colorado Mountain Club, Colorado Springs Astronomical Society and the Guild of Carillonneurs. She died March 12, 1964.

Scope and Content

Compositions, biographical material, photographs, newspaper clippings, and audio recordings document the life of Jean Miller in Colorado Springs.

The biography series includes case files of clippings, biographical outlines with handwritten notes, and printed material about Jean Miller. The ephemera folder contains a brochure about Fontainebleau, schools of music and fine arts, Pan Pipes of Sigma Alpha Iota; and a program for the Colorado Springs Symphony Orchestra.

Compositions include sheet music and lyrics by Jean Miller. Compositions identified as "folder" include multiple works in each folder.

A couple of poems are included in the collection including It is Remembered by Jean Miller and I Love My Jean by Robert Burns located in the "Lord Randal" folder.

A portrait of Jean is found in the collection. Another photograph of Jean can be found in the Pan Pipes of Sigma Alpha on page 57, in the first folder in the collection. Photographs have been separated from their original location for preservation purposes.
