Albert Eugene Carlton, “Bert,” was born February 20, 1866, in Warren, Illinois. He graduated from Beloit College in Wisconsin and started a merchandise store in Warren after graduation. Due to tuberculosis, he relocated to Colorado Springs, Colorado, in 1889. After he regained his health, he helped Harry Collbran and W. K. Gillett build the Midland Terminal Railroad. He then moved to Cripple Creek and started the Colorado Trading and Transfer Company, with his brother Leslie. They started out supplying firewood and coal to mines and then progressed to hauling gold from the mines to the Midland Terminal Railroad. With one business flourishing, Carlton bought the First National Bank of Cripple Creek from Jim Parker and J. L. Lindsay in 1898, five years after the bank started. He did not retire the Colorado Trading and Transfer Company until June 1903. Interestingly, Carlton eventually bought back Colorado Trading and Transfer Company in 1915 from his rival John T. Milliken.
Several employees, including his brother Leslie, kept the First National Bank of Cripple Creek in working order and assisted Carlton, while he traveled. Cashiers within the bank were Charles DeLongchamp, J. N. Simmons, M. J. Evans, H. R. Kuni, E. C. Newcomb, E. F. May, A. J. Turner, and L. T. Britton, who kept the day to day operations in order. Vice-Presidents included Larry Maroney and Virgil H. Mann, with secretary, Joseph F. Underwood. Liquidation proceedings for the bank did not start until 1971, well after Carlton’s death in 1931.
When Carlton became president of the First National Bank of Cripple Creek, he increased his wealth and was able to invest in mining companies. However, with a knack for reviving failing businesses, he also became involved in several other enterprises. He served as president for: City Bank of Victor; First National Bank of Canon City; Rio Grande Sampling Works in Victor; Cripple Creek Central Railway Company; Doctor-JackPot Mining Company; Findley Mines Company; Golden Cycle Mining and Reduction Company, Holly Sugar Company; and Cresson Consolidated Gold Mining Company. He served as vice-president for the Elkton Consolidated Mining Company. He also had large interests in the Mary McKinney Mine and the Vindicator Consolidated Mine. In 1915, Carlton acquired Golden Cycle Corporation in Colorado Springs from John Tait Milliken.
Carlton was also interested in tunnel construction to prevent flooding in the mines and thus revitalize the district through the construction of Roosevelt Tunnel. Carlton was director and a major shareholder for the Cripple Creek Drainage and Tunnel Company, which provided machinery and supplies, while a contractor supplied the labor and paid for electricity. Managed by the Cripple Creek Drainage and Tunnel Company, construction for Roosevelt Tunnel began in 1907, after the last attempt to drain the mines with the El Paso Tunnel in 1903, was insufficient. The tunnel was driven through extremely hard granite and extended 15,700 feet. Carlton was also involved as a contractor in the Strickler Tunnel construction associated with the Pikes Peak Power Company in Manitou Springs.
Albert Carlton’s personal life was somewhat secretive. He married Eva J. Stanton of Warren, Illinois, on December 4, 1890. They chose to keep the marriage a secret until he made a fortune. Eight years later Eva made their marriage known in Illinois. However, the marriage ended in divorce and Carlton married Ethel Frizzel in Washington, D.C., in 1901. A. E. Carlton was also a member of several elite clubs including the El Paso Club, Order of Owls, Town and Gown Golf Club, and Denver Country Club to name a few. A. E. Carlton died September 9, 1931, in Pine Valley, north of Colorado Springs, which is now part of the Air Force Academy. Ethel lived in the Penrose Suite at the Broadmoor after his death. She continued to honor her husband’s memory by the way of the Carlton Tunnel constructed in 1941.

Correspondence, financial documentation, legal documentation, reports, minutes, and assorted documentation from 1893 to 1966 highlight the financial workings of the First National Bank of Cripple Creek and also Albert Eugene Carlton’s influence in mining companies and other business ventures in the city of Cripple Creek and throughout the United States. The collection is divided into two main series: The First National Bank of Cripple Creek and the personal papers of A. E. Carlton, who is president of the bank. The remaining series regarding other companies and Mr. Carlton’s brother Leslie are significantly smaller segments of the collection at large. A more detailed description of each series is printed below.
Metal pins and paper clips were removed from materials. Several of the materials are in poor condition with singed edges, rust marks, water damage and dirt covering the documents. Some materials were photocopied due to such poor conditions.
This collection contains English, German, Spanish, and French languages.
SERIES I: FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF CRIPPLE CREEK SERIES
Subseries A: Correspondence
Information found in the bank series correspondence includes requests for employment, routine banking business, inquiries about stock recommendations, credit checks, and insurance. Unrelated finance topics such as labor strikes, mining, and tunnel construction can also be found in the correspondence. For a more detailed list of subjects refer to the listing below. It is not an inclusive list of subjects, nor is the collection indexed by personal name. Documents are filed under the business name or by the individual’s name if it is addressed to a private party. There are numerous accounts of businesses contacting the First National Bank for credit information regarding an individual. The information that the bank provides includes age, marital status, employment, income, and character summations. Those marked “United States” refer to different departments in the federal government such as the Treasury Department or Department of the Interior.
Multiple authors of the correspondence are found in this series including: Albert Carlton, Leslie Carlton, and cashiers. Other formats also found in the correspondence folders include: statements, invoices, minutes, reports, etc.
Verbatim folder titles were retained. A few materials were found in file boxes, these folders have been identified as such. These were somewhat unique since almost all of the material was already in folders. However, due to the alphabetical organization it can be inferred that the materials were once originally housed in file boxes, too. Materials within the series are arranged chronologically and then alphabetically.
Some correspondence has a numeric code. A key is found at the end of the series in box 103. Other keys are located throughout the collection. Some keys were time specific, with an expiration date. Subseries B: Ledger Correspondence
Ledger correspondence appears to be from the cashier’s records. Much of the communication is day-to-day business dealings. Also included are invoices and other financial documentation, which were kept with the correspondence to maintain a context for the collection. Overall not all of the ledgers were retained, only a sampling of the ledgers were kept. All documents have two holes in the top from the rings of the ledger. Ledger #716 contains a document titled “Items remaining from original bad list,” which includes a list of names and amounts owed and information concerning land, stocks, livestock and crops. Ledger #702 includes information about the Federal Reserve System. Ledger #668 includes information regarding the Pinkerton Detective Agency. Ledger #666 mentions the municipal water works bonds in Manitou Springs and a request to keep the state militia in the strike distance. Ledger #675 also mentions the state militia.
Subseries C: Subject Files
Subject files contain drafts for collection from companies outside of Colorado all across the U.S. requesting referrals for attorneys and collection agencies. The files appear to belong to the cashier of the bank and capture only a short period of time from 1899 to 1902. Not all of the subject files were retained due to limited research value. The original folder files had the file names written on masking tape attached to the file tab. It is believed that these were not the original files from 1900, but were how they were received at the library.
Subseries D: Financial Documentation
“Bills” within this series include invoices from a variety of businesses. Some also appear to include personal expenses such as laundry. “Bills discounted” is a listing of alphabetical names, interest rates, monthly payments, and a balance for loans. “Condition reports” are printed reports of total resources and liabilities of the bank that were then posted in the newspaper. “Documents” refer to mortgages, deeds, taxes, etc. “Financial Statements” contain information about companies in the form of board minutes, notices to stockholders, condition reports and other financial documentation. A detailed listing of the companies mentioned is provided below: Financial Statements, 1909-1910Clements Leasing Company

Folder A-D, 1910, provides information on the Roosevelt Tunnel and a quarterly report for the Doctor-Jackpot Mining Company. Folder Ho-O, 1914, includes court cases against Doctor Jackpot by Monarch Mountain, Roxana, and Connell and Bell. Folder H-L, 1915, includes an accident report for James R. Jennings. This same folder also advertises a “lungmotor” for sale, which is a respirator. Folder S-Z, 1916, includes a report to the IRS regarding the Vindicator. The miscellaneous folder includes a list of stockholders, bristol’s recording volt meter, handwritten notes, list of proxies, minutes, and a letter in French. “Reports, documents, misc.” includes court cases of S. C. Paxson, Teller County’s Treasurer, versus the Cresson Consolidated Mine and Acacia Gold Mining Company.
Subseries D: Mining Companies
The Mining Companies in this subseries are: Aloha Gold Mining Company, Copeland Ore Sampling Company, Elkton Gold Mining Company, Findley Mines Company, Isabella Mines Company, Midget Consolidated Gold Mining Company, and Portland Gold Mining Company.
The Findley Mines Company miscellaneous folder includes a copy of the October 1911 Quarterly of the Colorado School of Mines, which provides a summary of Stratton’s Independence Mill and the New Portland Mill. This folder also includes recommendations for the Findley mine from an inspector. The K-W, 1913, folder includes a Findley-Stratton suit. A stockholder is upset about the value of the stock. The folder H, 1914, continues the discussion about the Findley versus Stratton estate.
Also included in this subseries are payroll and accident reports of miners. Payroll records are from the Cresson Consolidated Mine, Mary McKinney Mine, Pikes Peak Fuel Company, Golden Cycle Corporation and LeClair Consolidated Mine. The accident and sickness report folder contains a comparison report of injuries from different mines in 1941. Items tallied include eye, foot, head injuries, lost time, and frequency and severity of injuries. Individual reports are linked to the state compensation insurance fund.

A cost per foot break down in terms of labor, supplies, coal, etc. for the Strickler Tunnel is found in the 1897-1902 folder. A month by month breakdown of costs of labor, explosives, and supplies in chart form is located in the 1899-1906 folder. In the 1899-1903 folder a statement by J. L. Ohle, superintendent of the power company, is provided.
