Collection Summary

Title L.H. Guldman Golden Eagle Dry Goods Company Records
Dates (Inclusive) 1880-1936
Creator Golden Eagle Dry Goods Company
Abstract Leopold H. Guldman (1853-1936) founded the Golden Eagle Dry Goods Company of Denver in 1879, eight years after his arrival from his native Germany. He was one of Colorado's pioneer merchants and philanthropists. By the late 1870s he had come to the Colorado mountains in search of silver, but found it more profitable to open the Golden Eagle Clothing stores in Leadville and Cripple Creek, Colorado. In 1879, he moved to Denver and opened the third and most successful Golden Eagle store. This store was Denver's leading popular-price department store for many years. His vigorous advertising campaigns, combined with an aggressive policy of buying and selling for cash only, soon established record sales for him. The rapid growth of the Golden Eagle necessitated continual expansion and remodeling. By 1901, its five-story building occupied most of the block at 16th and Lawrence Streets. The store was closed and the stock liquidated upon Guldman's death in 1936. He donated the first Jewish Community Center, helped found Temple Emanuel, National Jewish Hospital, Beth Israel Hospital, and was a key figure in numerous other charitable endeavors. The records of the Golden Eagle were transferred by Deed of Gift from the University of Colorado Norlin Library to the Beck Archives in 1994. It represents all phases of the company's diversification, including general accounts, purchased and receiving records, sales and shipping records, etc. Although a few of the records extend back into the 1880's, most of the material covers the period from 1900 to 1936. The records are reflective of Denver's economic growth during that period.

Biography/Organizational History

Leopold Henry Guldman (1853-1936) emigrated from his native Bavaria when he was eighteen years old. Arriving in New York City, he immediately headed west to Watertown, Wisconsin. Once there, he worked for his brother-in-law, Morris A. Hirsh, who owned a New York Store. During his stay in Wisconsin, he learned the language, customs, and business practices of the United States. In the late 1870s, he headed for Leadville, Colorado, probably in the hopes of making his fortune in the silver bonanza that gripped the region at that time.

After only a year in Leadville, Guldman decided that he could make his fortune not in the mining camps, but in the dry goods business. The record shows that for a time between 1879 and 1880 he had a partner by the name of Simon M. Wineman and that the firm itself was being referred to as both Wineman and Guldman as well as the Golden Eagle. The partnership was officially terminated in August 1880.

That same year Guldman went into business with Bernhardt Heller under the name of the Golden Eagle Dry Goods House. Their partnership lasted approximately three years, until it was dissolved on July 12, 1883, with Guldman becoming the sole proprietor of the establishment on 391 Lawrence Street.

Through aggressive advertising and pricing, the company grew quickly. By 1889, the Golden Eagle of Denver sold children's suits, wraps, jerseys, jackets, dry goods, notions, hosiery, muslin underwear, seal garments, furs, cloaks, corsets, and millinery. Part of the success of Gulman's enterprise stemmed from his astute business acumen; for example, he only bought and sold in cash, procuring his stock from primarily bankrupted companies.

In August 1904, for $60,000 in cash, Guldman purchased the Times Building on Lawrence, near 16th Street. This major purchase necessitated an equally large expansion of his establishment into a five-story department store. In 1912, plans were discussed for a twelve-story building, but such a structure never came to fruition.

The Golden Eagle's unrivaled success meant that L.H. Guldman was able to become one of Denver's philanthropic princes. He is credited with donating Denver's first Jewish Community Center, the Guldman Center, being one of the founders of both the National Jewish Hospital and the Beth Israel Hospital, and donating generously to a number of other charities. His most important gift was $50,000 to Beth Israel Hospital in 1923.

The company remained in operation through the years of the Great Depression, but finally closed for good in 1941, probably due to its founder's death five years prior.

Scope and Content

The records of the Golden Eagle represent all phases of the company's diversification, including general accounts, payroll records, sales and stock records, department records, incoming and outgoing letters and telegrams, contracts, and various personal and miscellaneous items. The bulk of the material represents the period from 1900 to 1936. Unfortunately, few of the records represent the company's nascent period in the nineteenth century; in fact, the earliest complete record extends back only to 1885.
