History

Arlene Hopkins and Steve Robideau as they enter the historic meeting with the United Nations discussing the case of Leonard Peltier. (Box 6, Folder 27).

The American Indian Movement (AIM) was founded in 1968 in the Stillwater State Penitentiary by three Indian inmates - Clyde Bellecourt, Dennis Banks, and Edward Benton-Banai. AIM was first organized to teach the many Indian inmates of their spiritual history and how to stay out of jail once paroled. The movement was centered on a revitalized sense of pride in traditional Indian values to turn Indians away from alcohol, crime, and despair. AIM's purpose was to correct the genocidal conditions under which Indians lived: 70-80% unemployment; grossly inadequate housing, education, and health care; and the highest infant mortality rate and the lowest life expectancy in the nation.

In early 1970 the idea of tribal sovereignty was endorsed and AIM began its quest to restore it. From 1970 to 1980 AIM was targeted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as a terrorist organization. During this time three major incidents occurred: The Trail of Broken Treaties caravan in 1972 (or the BIA building takeover), the Wounded Knee Occupation in 1973, and the incident at Oglala in 1975.

Robert E. Robideau, an AIM activist, was one of the prime suspects in the incident at Oglala in 1975. He was acquitted, along with Darell Butler, in the killing of the two FBI agents in 1976. Ever since 1976 Robert Robideau has worked for the release of his cousin Leonard Peltier, who was the other prime suspect and who was sentenced to two life terms for the killings. Robideau has served twice as the director of the Leonard Peltier Defense Committee. He has been relentless in his pursuit of Peltier's freedom by telling Leonard's story to anyone who would listen and help. Along side his work for Peltier's release Robideau has never given up his Indian activist work. In 1994 Robideau led a contingent of thirteen chapters of the American Indian Movement in denouncing the Minneapolis chapter of AIM (or National AIM) because that chapter was subverting the movement. This led to the creation of what is now known as the Autonomous Chapters of the American Indian Movement.

Robert Robideau died on February 17, 2009 in Barcelona Spain. He was 61 years old. Authorities said that his death might have been related to seizures caused by shrapnel left in his head from an accidental explosion.

Robideau papers contain reports, court documents, Freedom of Information Act released FBI files, newspaper clippings, correspondence, handwritten notes, publications, audio-cassette tapes, flyers, and research files pertaining to Robideau's life-long work as an American Indian Movement activist. The collection is divided into 3 overlapping series.
