The Frank A. Bauman Papers consist of the World War II files of Lt. Frank A. Bauman USNR (1921- ). Bauman attended the US Navy Japanese Language School at the University of Colorado in Boulder from 1943 to 1944. Lt. Bauman served in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Peleliu, Guam, Okinawa and Japan as a Joint Intelligence Center, Pacific Ocean Area (JICPOA) officer from 1944 and 1945. Lt. Russell Edward Brimhall of Hatch, New Mexico, entered the US Naval Training School (Radio), Company 17, on July 22, 1943. The US Navy Radio School was located at the University of Colorado in Boulder from 1942 to 1944 and trained 29 companies. The collection consists of Brimhall’s autobiography, entitled This is My Story: A Rocky Road. The 235 page manuscript deals with not only Brimhall’s World War II experiences, but those throughout his entire life.

Chaffin graduated from the US Navy Japanese Language School, located at the University of Colorado in Boulder from 1942-1946. Chaffin served in the US Navy during World War II and the Korean War. Charles Tenney Cross (1922 - ) had a distinguished career in the Foreign Service, serving as Ambassador to Singapore, Consul General in Hong Kong, and Director of the American Institute in Taiwan. Cross was born in China and grew up speaking Mandarin Chinese. At the start of WWII, Cross was a sophomore at Carleton College. David Hawkins (1913-2002), scientist, mathematician, philosopher and educator was the official historian of the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, New Mexico. The collection contains the papers of Arthur R. Dornheim, who graduated from the US Navy Japanese Language School, at the University of Colorado in Boulder from 1942-1946. The collection consists of memorabilia and photographs of JLS, wartime, and post-War years. Dornheim was assigned to JICPOA in Pearl Harbor for two years but in 1944 escorted Japanese prisoners captured on Guam to Pearl Harbor. He also served in the Occupation of Japan in SCAJAP and the Language Reform Section, CI&E.

The collection was donated by the Fortnightly Club of Boulder. Mary Rippon and eight other women formed the Club in 1884. Membership was originally divided equally by women associated with the University of Colorado at Boulder and women from the city of Boulder. The Pughe Papers are the combined papers of George Arthur Pughe and his son James Moffat Pughe. The Pughes were attorneys in Craig, Colorado and their papers cover the years 1910-1984. This collection contains correspondence between the years 1923-1953, financial records, personal records, and legal and subject files, as well as information on the Colorado Water Conservation Board for both George and James Pughe.
