Biography / History

The Colorado Springs Pride Center was founded in 1978 and was one of the oldest LGBT community centers in the United States. For 37 years the Pride Center offered assistance, advocacy, and support programs for people across the Pikes Peak region. More than 8,400 people contacted the non-profit organization in 2014 seeking help and advice. The Colorado Springs Pride Center closed in January 2015.

Scope and Content

The Colorado Springs Pride Center Records date from 1989-2012 and includes five series: Organizational Records, Printed Material, Scrapbooks, Media, and Photographs.

The Organizational Records series includes three subseries: Correspondence, Business Documents, and Subject Files. Correspondence dates from 1992-2012 and consists of handwritten notes, emails, and cards. The Business Documents date from 1994-2005. Material in this subseries includes events, by-laws, election information, and a membership form. Subject Files covers topics including Amendment 2, AIDS, Hate Crimes, Boycotts, and Same Sex Marriage.

Printed Material consists of four subseries: Articles, Newsletters and Magazines, News Releases, and Clippings. The Articles subseries ranges from 1992-2011 and largely covers the topic of marriage. Newsletters and Magazines contains material from organizations including Equality Colorado, the Pikes Peak Gay Community Center, and the Colorado Progressive Coalition. News Releases date from 1993-1996 and Clippings range from 1990-2012. Both subseries cover local and national issues.

There are two Scrapbooks ranging from 1992-2007.

Media contains DVDs and CD-ROMs. There are four DVDs in the first subseries; three are undated and one is from March 2010. Topics include Amendment 2, Ryan Acker, and a 20/20 episode on transgender children. There is one undated CD-ROM about affirmative action in this series.

The Photographs are unprocessed and are located in the Photo Archives.

Custodial History

The Colorado Springs Pride Center donated these materials to Inside Out Youth Services when they closed in 2015. Inside Out Youth Services in turn donated the materials to PPLD.
