Biography / History

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was established on December 8, 1970, with a mission “to protect human health and the environment.” To accomplish this mission, the EPA develops and enforces regulations, provides grants, studies environmental issues, sponsors partnerships, and publishes information.

The Environmental Protection Agency Region 8 (Mountains and Plains) serves Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, Wyoming, and 27 Tribal Nations. EPA Region 8 is headquartered in Denver, Colorado.

Scope and Content

The Environmental Protection Agency Region 8, Colorado Springs Records date from 1983-1996. This collection consists of six series: Galley Road Dump Site, Black Forest Drums, Polk Street Drums, High Quality Circuits, Rocky Mountain Custom Chrome, and Chipita Pit.

The Galley Road Dump Site series ranges from 1987-1996. The material focuses on a removal action for the Galley Road Dump Site located at Galley Road and Powers Boulevard. The removal action was completed to mitigate threats to the environment and local population posed by hazardous material. Documents include correspondence, legal work plans, and progress reports.

Black Forest Drums ranges from 1987-1989 and is regarding the removal of 141 drums of methylene chloride contaminated soil. Correspondence, site assessments, safety plans, notifications, and summaries are included in this series.

The Polk Street Drums series is about the removal of abandoned waste drums at 3230 East Polk Street. Fact sheets, correspondence, and pollution reports are contained in this series, dating 1994-1995.

A drum removal at 2537 Weston Road consisting of combustible and hazardous material makes up the High Quality Circuits series. The material dates 1987-1990 and is arranged by document number. Material includes incident reports, correspondence, and memoranda.

The Rocky Mountain Custom Chrome ranges from 1987-1988 and covers a removal action for 19 drums of contaminated soil and liquids at 516 and 522 E. Costilla Street. Documents include notifications, safety plans, and site assessments.

The Chipita Pit material covers the Chipita Ranch Corporation’s application for a permit extension. These records date 1984-1991 and include letters of protest, newspaper clippings, and agreements.
