Collection consists of original documents and photocopies involving Acoma and Laguna
Indian Pueblos in New Mexico. Includes letters and various legal documents. Much of the
collection concerns legal disputes between Acoma and Laguna Pueblos over land tenure,
boundaries, and water rights. Also within the collection is a 1904 letter to officials at Acoma
Pueblo from officials at New Mexico's eight northern Pueblos requesting united opposition among
all Pueblos to the New Mexico Supreme Court's declaration that Pueblo Indians and lands are
subject to taxation.

Antonio Marin del Valle re settlement of water dispute between Acoma and Laguna at Cubero,
dated April 25, 1832.

1854 Apr. 22. William S. Messervy, Acting
Governor of New Mexico, to Governors of Pueblos of Laguna and Acoma ordering that Pueblo of
Laguna remain in possession of planted lands until Oct. 31, on which date both Pueblos must
appear in Santa Fe with their documents of possession so that the dispute may be adjudicated.

1854 July 27. Copy of letter from Governor David
Meriwether to John Ward, Special Agent for Pueblo Indians, ordering him to proceed to the
Pueblos of Laguna and Acoma and settle the controversy between the Pueblos.

Dec. 5. Spruce M. Baird contract with the Pueblo of Acoma to act
as attorney in prosecuting Laguna Indians for assault, representing Acoma against Laguna in
irrigation suits and against Victor de la O for recovery of Pueblo papers.

New Mexico that at the request of the Pueblo of Acoma, Pino and Duran had investigated the

Jose Miguel, Governor of Acoma, ordering him to accept Diego Antonio Chaves as instructor of
Pueblo children, ages 7-14; and advising that salary will be paid by the territory.

1865 Nov. 30. Pablo Padilla, Justice of Peace,
Valencia County, to Sheriff or deputy ordering that summons be served on Rosalia Cortes to
appear in court, December 4, to answer charges made by Ygnacio Padilla.

1866 Sept. 22. Toribio Romero, Pueblo Indian
Agent, Los Lunas, to Vicente Juancho, informing him that charges have been brought against him by
Acoma Governor Mariano Pancho, charging thathe has penned up four cows belonging to Pancho
without reason, and ordering release of the stock.

Francisco Juancho, Governor of Laguna, informing Juancho of complaint against Pueblo of Laguna.

Agent, to the officials of the Pueblo of Acoma, notification that Reacome is recognized by the
Agent as Pueblo governor.

Padilla, delegates of the Pueblo Indians, Santa Fe, to Juan Andres Abeita of the Peblo of Isleta re
funds being raised for proposed journey (to Washington?). Copy addressed to the Governor of
Acoma for the information of his people.

(?) May 7. Spanish translation of letter from
Acting Commissioner of Indian Affairs C.E. Mix, to Superintendent of Indian Affairs for New
Mexico L.E. Webb, stating that Pueblo Agent John Ward and delegates for the Pueblo Indians,
Alejandro Padilla and Ambrosio Abeita have been in Washington to protest district court decision
which would deprive the Pueblos of their lands and protection of the Federal Government. Agent
Ward will be reimbursed for his expenses. Two copies. Notation on second document indicates it
was copy given to Pueblo delegates at Isleta August 9.

Commissioner of Indian Affairs, Washington, to Juan Andres Abeita and Juan Rey Lucero,
assuring Pueblo Indians of the continuing concern of the President of the United States.

1871 Mar. 10. Nathaniel Pope, Superintendent of
Indian Affairs to Jose Miguel, Governor of Acoma, informing him that Ramon Sanches does not
hold position of Indian Agent and has no right to interfere with the Pueblo.

1872 Mar. 10. Miguel Olona, school teacher at
Acoma, to Governor of Acoma Jose Antonio Garcia notifying him that several children have not
obeyed Governor's orders to attend school.

Dec. 10. Ambrosio Armijo, Albuquerque, to the Governor of
Acoma, requesting the governor to send members of the Pueblo to his store in Albuquerque to
purchase goods.

1873 May 24. Juanico Romero, Sacristan of
Acoma, to Father Lestre at Acomita, request for the priest to baptize at the Pueblo.

1877 Mar. 28. Certified copy of the Third Judicial
District of the Territory, court decree establishing the Canada de la Cruz as the dividing line
between the Pueblos of Laguna and Acoma.

1888-1889. Jose Leon Telles, Justice of the Peace of San Rafael,
Precinct #17, Valencia County. Order charging Andres Martin and Solomon Bibo of the Pueblo of
Acoma with protecting the limits of the land patented to the Pueblo of Acoma from trespassers.
This document is undated but Solomon Bibo was governor of Acoma during these years.

1904 Mar. 24. Officials of the northern Pueblos of
Taos, San Juan, Santa Clara, San Ildefonso, Nambe, Pojoaque, Tesuque and Picuris to the officials
of the Pueblo of Acoma. Statement of united opposition to Territorial Supreme Court decision
declaring the Pueblo Indians citizens and their land subject to taxation and requesting united action
of all Pueblos to oppose the decision with federal and territorial authorities.

No Date. Statement of Francisco Roman Gallego that in 1828 as
Teniente of the Pueblo of Acoma he had settled a lawsuit between the Pueblos of Acoma and
Laguna over a piece of land in the Cubero area conveyed by deceased Toribio Sarracino.
