Abstract Collection consists of incoming letters to Wells Brothers, wholesale purveyors of butter and eggs, in Coffeyville Kansas from a variety of businesses in New Mexico, Arizona, Indian Territory, and Texas. A few letters are from businesses in Louisiana, Arkansas, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Montana, and Washington. Letters relate to orders for goods.

Scope and Content

Letters concern orders and shipment by railroad of butter, eggs, and to a lesser extent, chickens and turkeys to general store merchants, grocers, hotel owners, and a few individuals primarily in New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, and Indian Territory. A few letters are from businesses in Louisiana, Arkansas, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Montana, and Washington.

Customers and correspondents include the following:

New Mexico: Palace Hotel (Cerrillos), Bee Hive Restaurant (Las Vegas), as well as businesses in Eddy, Lordsburg, Deming, and Hillsboro.

Arizona: Tucson Grocer Co. (Tucson), La Iberia (Nogales), Jos. Pascholy (Nogales), Bashford Burmister Company (Prescott), Sherman House (Prescott). Indian Territory: 2 businesses in Talala and Lehigh Indian Territory

Indian Territory: 2 businesses in Talala and Lehigh Indian Territory

Texas: National Bank of Denison, The Favorite Saloon (Bracketville), Hotel Maverick (Eagle Pass), Texas and Pacific Railway Co., and businesses in Beaumont, El Paso, and Houston.

The letters provide insight into the demand for quality butter and eggs, the array of businesses that ordered these goods shipped from Kansas, and the demographics of proprietors. Some of the stationary letterheads may also be of interest to researchers.
