Biography

Coming to UNC from his post as Vice President of Academic Affairs at Illinois State University, Richard "Dick" Bond set out to follow the "road less traveled." Bond wanted to make education as accessible as possible. He believed in expanding the university's role beyond the confines of the campus and also worked for a more innovative, student-oriented, and accessible institution. Nevertheless, he also underscored the importance of UNC remaining a leading teacher education institution.

Bond was president from 1971-1981.

Collection Scope and Contents

This collection contains materials from Dr. Richard Bond's presidency, including correspondence, clippings, reports, speeches, photographs, scrapbooks, and artifacts. The collection includes biographical information, the 1974-1978 Master Plan, 1973 State of the University Address, correspondence and clippings about a 1979 plagiarism scandal, and the 1971 UNC Fact Book. Artifacts in this collection include a door plaque, prop sword, and a box with two gavels that belonged to Dr. Bond. This collection also contains legislative materials from Dr. Bond's time as a State Representative.
