Florence Becker Lennon was born in New York City on February 20, 1895, the daughter of
Johanna Beran and Leon Tanenbaum. She received a Bachelor's degree in anthropology at
Columbia University and a Master's degree in education at the University of Colorado. A poet
and author, she published four books of poetry, including Forty Years in the
Wilderness, and a biography of Lewis Carroll, Victoria Through the
Looking-Glass: The Life of Lewis Carroll. This was later revised and reissued as
The Life of Lewis Carroll in America. Florence Becker Lennon served as a
freelance writer for the New York Call, the Boulder Daily
Camera, and Town & Country Review. She also hosted the radio
program, "The Enjoyment of Poetry," on WEVD in New York, and later in Boulder on KGNU.
Lennon's central preoccupation was Global Housekeeping, that is, learning to live with one
another and caring for the environment. In 1975, the University of Colorado awarded her an
Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters. She died on December 18, 1984.
She had two daughters, Heloise (Becky), born in 1927, and Isadora (Twinkie), born in 1929.
This collection is comprised of typescripts, correspondence, pictures, clippings,
periodicals, audiotapes, published works, memorabilia, and other materials. [Previously
titled The Florence Becker Lennon Collection.]
