Biographical Information
Merrill E. Stacy (1911-1966) was president and general manager (1964 – 1966) of The New Mexican and other newspapers owned by Robert McKinney. Born in Avalon, New York, he moved to New Mexico with his family in 1920. He was a graduate of the University of New Mexico. After serving in the U. S. Army Field Artillery during World War II, he returned to Santa Fe, married Gloria Stacey, and started a family which would eventually include three sons, Guy, Mark, and David and one daughter, Susan. He worked for Santa Fe Builders for 28 years and later joined the staff of The New Mexican in 1964. He was a member of Santa Fe Rotary Club, Santa Fe United Fund, the Chamber of Commerce, and the St. Vincent Hospital Advisory Board. He was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, in the basement of his Santa Fe home, on September 12, 1966.
Scope and Content
The Merrill E. Stacy Collection (ca. 1900 - 1970) contains approximately 200 photograph prints, small albums, mounted portraits, and one Super8 mm film related to his personal life, family, and tour in the European Theater during World War II.
Note: Box 2 consists largely of unidentified photographs which appear to date from circa 1890s-1920s and not be located in New Mexico. These are possibly photos of relatives and/or ancestors of Merrill or Gloria.
