Biographical Information

Cruz Alvarez was born in La Union, New Mexico on September 14, 1896. His grandfather, Jose Alvarez was one of the founders of La Union after the Gadsden Purchase. He married Fannie Bermudes and the couple had two children; Ben and Lucilla. Alvarez began attending the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, but was recommended by the college as a liaison officer attache as a translator for the United States embassy in Madrid, Spain. He attended the New Mexico State Teachers College and studied law at the National University in Washington, D. C. Alvarez was certification clerk in the State Department of Public Instruction in Santa Fe and was also Chief South American Correspondent for Wellman, Parker and Co. in San Francisco, California. He was court reporter for Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, worked as a notary public, and served as secretary to Albert Sims and Bronson Cutting. Alvarez was a member of the Las Cruces School Board in 1949. In 1945, he wrote The Land of Mystic Wonders, a description of New Mexico as viewed by Alvarez. Cruz Alvarez died in his Mesilla home on November 22, 1987.


Scope and Content

The Cruz Alvarez Papers comprise one linear foot and span the years 1918-1988. The papers include not only materials from Cruz Alvarez, but also from his son Ben, his parents Dionicio and Cecelia, and his wife's family, the Bermudes'. The collection is arranged alphabetically by subject. Unless noted, materials in the collection were created or collected by Cruz Alvarez. The correspondence has been arranged chronologically, with the exception of correspondence from Bronson Cutting, which has been placed in its own folder.
