Personal History

Hewett was a farmer in Ohio and Illinois, and was the grandfather of Edgar L. Hewett, a prominent New Mexican who founded the Museum of New Mexico.


Scope and Content

Collection consists of 27 letters sent by Harvey J. Hewett from Ohio and Illinois to family members in Maine from 1820 to 1850. The letters describe the movement and conditions of farming families in Ohio and Illinois.

Three folders contain letters sent from H.J. Hewett of Liberty, OH, and Greenbush, IL, to his family in Maine during 1820-1850. Hewett was a farmer of great religious fervor. His letters indicate the type of religious fervor typical of the region and period. The letters also show the movement of a frontier family and condition on the frontier.
