Ernest Warnock Tedlock from Tedlock's self-published "Told by the
Weather," 1983. (Box 3, Folder 23).
Ernest Warnock Tedlock was born on December 20, 1910 in St. Joseph, Missouri. He attended
the University of Missouri (1928-1932) where he majored in English and minored in Greek. He
completed his masters degree at the same university in 1933, continuing his graduate studies
at the University of Chicago (1934-1936) Tedlock earned his Ph.D. at the University of
Southern California (1946-1950). He is eminent in the field of modern poetry and fiction and
is a recognized authority and scholar on D.H. Lawrence.
Tedlock's association with the University of New Mexico spans over forty years. He has
served in the capacities of instructor (1943-1947), assistant professor (1947-1952),
associate professor (1952-1959), professor (1959-1972) and professor emeritus (since 1972).
Throughout his professional career he has maintained various organizational affiliations.
These include: the American Studies Association; the Modern Language Association of America
(past section chair); the Association of University Professors and the Rocky Mountain Modern
Language Association. Tedlock has travelled and lived abroad while conducting research. He
was a Rockefeller Research fellow (1944-1945) and is fluent in French and German.
His contributions to the scholarly work on Dylan Thomas, John Steinbeck and D.H. and Frieda
Lawrence have added to the literary records and understanding of those individuals.
Tedlock's works include: The Frieda Lawrence Collection of D.H.
Lawrence Manuscripts (UNM Press, 1948); Steinbeck and His
Critics, co-edited with C.V. Wicker (UNM Press, 1956); Dylan Thomas, The Legend and the Poet (Heinemann, 1962); D.H. Lawrence: Artist and Rebel (UNM Press, 1963); Frieda
Lawrence: Memoirs and Correspondence (Heinemann, 1961; Knopf, 1964) and D.H. Lawrence, "Sons and Lovers": Sources and Criticisms (UNM
Press, 1965).
Tedlock has also served on various editorial staffs of regional magazines. One such local
effort devoted to poetry was Inscape Magazine (1959-1962),
which enabled young writers and poets to publish their work. He later founded the San Marcos
Press, dedicated to publishing works related to regional poetry and history. This press was
active from 1968 to approximately 1980. Ernest Tedlock passed away in Albuquerque on
September 11, 1988.
The papers of Ernest W. Tedlock relate mainly to his research and general interest in D.H.
and Frieda Lawrence. Reference to works and projects concerning other literary figures such
as Dylan Thomas and John Steinbeck are a minute portion of this collection but underscore
Tedlock's interest in a particular literary period.
The collection itself is divided into six series and reflects Tedlock's scholarly interest
in the study of D.H. Lawrence. The first series is entirely composed of typescripts and
drafts of his published works (1945 and 1948) entitled The
Manuscripts of D.H. Lawrence: A Descriptive Bibliography and The Frieda Lawrence Collection of D.H. Lawrence Manuscripts: A Descriptive
Bibliography. Also included in this section are the working galley proofs and
corrections for a 1964 work, Frieda Lawrence: Memoirs and
Correspondence.
The second series is primarily research material devoted to his publications about the
Lawrences covering the time period 1890-1980. Of particular interest in this series are the
copies of Frieda Lawrence correspondence that Tedlock was able to collect.
Tedlock's personal correspondence with close friends of the Lawrences such as Witter Bynner
(1948-1975) and David Garnett (1957-1978) comprises series three.
Series four includes general correspondence for the period 1944-1980 with other friends and
associates of the Lawrences. The most important part of this section is the publication
correspondence maintained by Tedlock for the works on the Lawrences and on the poet Dylan
Thomas.
Series five includes glimpses of various poets and poetry projects in which Tedlock took an
interest. In particular, Inscape Magazine, a local poetry
magazine and the creation of the San Marcos Press by Tedlock reflect his interest in the
promotion of local and regional poetry.
The final series consists of miscellaneous D.H. and Frieda Lawrence material and includes
reviews of Tedlock's works, lists of D.H. Lawrence material compiled by Frieda after his
death and typescript revisions of Lady Chatterley's Lover,
which are undated but were probably given to Tedlock by Frieda Lawrence.
The collection is comprised of a 1945 donation (Series I) and a 1984 donation (Series II -
VI). A small addition made in 2002 contains a few publications by Tedlock.
