Project History:

The "South Valley Oral History Project" was sponsored by the New Mexico Endowment for the Humanities, and conducted by the University of New Mexico Oral History Program. It was an adjunct project of the National Endowment for the Humanities' "National Conversations Project." The project was to include the South Valley area of metropolitan Albuquerque and southern Bernalillo County (including the areas known as Los Padillas, Pajarito, Armijo, Atrisco, and Five Points), and the region known as Magdalena-Alamo in Socorro County, just west of the city of Socorro. The material in this collection relates only to the South Valley. Interviews were conducted in the Winter of 1995 and Spring of 1996. The interviews were designed to explore issues of ethnicity and community. Discussions of community included cohesiveness, change over time, needs, image, and whether the South Valley should be its own county. The interviews begin with a short biographical sketch of the interviewee's family, and then move on to issues of community. The interviews end with concerns about the community and where the community is headed. The project culminated in a town meeting, which was poorly attended by community members.

W. Ken Medlin was the project director; Stephen Fox was the project supervisor; Carlos Vásquez served as principal field director, and Dana Schults was field director for the Magdalena-Alamo site. Interviews were conducted by Carlos Vásquez and several students and interns who were trained by the UNM Oral History Program.

The NMEH South Valley Oral History Project may also be known as the "South Valley Oral History Project," "New Mexico Endowment for the Humanities South Valley Oral History Project," or "National Conversations in Albuquerque's South Valley and Alamo/Magdalena."

Scope and Content

This collection contains oral history interviews with 31 individuals from Albuquerque's predominantly Hispanic South Valley. Twenty seven interviews, conducted with 29 individuals, are recorded on 27 sixty-minute audio cassettes. The interview with Benny and Anita Sedillo was not recorded, but there are notes from that interview. There are tape summaries and logs for each of the recorded interviews. Additionally, there is a project description, background information, a resource kit from the National Endowment for the Humanities, "National Conversations Project," and materials relating to the town hall meeting that was held at the end of the project.

Interviews were conducted in English and in Spanish. All tape logs are in English. Original audio cassettes are housed in B3. Duplicate tapes for patron use are housed in the collection
