Dennis Dutton lived in San Diego and was editor of the journal Shaman's Drum between about 1986 and 1988. He then moved to El Rito, New Mexico and worked with
Clear Light Publishing in Santa Fe. Dutton founded and headed up the New Mexico Chapter of PEN, an organization protecting free expression among writers.
He resigned from PEN over a freedom of expression controversy concerning Judith Fein's book,
Indian Time. Dutton was a vocal opponent of development at the Kumeyaay (Kamia Indians) sacred
mountain Cuchama (known as Tecate Peak) on the California/Mexico border. He maintained an
active correspondence with several local and national literary and anthropological
writers, notably Frank Waters and Vine Deloria.
Contains letters and documents pertaining to Dutton's career as an editor, publisher,
and student of shamanism.
