2 series: Apache Relations and Navajo Relations
This collection contains correspondence and documents related to Apache and Navajo
affairs in New Mexico during the mid-ninetieth century. It is arranged into two
series: Apache Relations and Navajo Relations. The Apache related materials consist
primarily of letters written to David Meriwether, Governor of New Mexico and
Superintendent of Indian Affairs concerning thefts and murders by Apache groups. It
also includes the quarterly expense reports from Edward H. Wingfield, Apache Indian
Agent. The materials related to Navajos contain correspondence to and from Henry L.
Dodge, Navajo Indian Agent, which deal with trade issues, supplies and rations for
Navajos. It also includes Dodges’ quarterly expense reports.

Quarterly expense reports from Edward H. Wingfield, Indian Agent
for the Apaches. (7 total) March 1853
Includes lists of property received, statements of fixed property at
Fort Webster and persons employed within Apache Indian agency;
abstracts of disbursements made for services and provision for the
agency; articles delivered to Indians within the agency such as
food, tobacco, dry goods, blankets and yarn.

McFerran reports on murder of two men by Apache party from the White
and Sacramento Mountains; mentions other situations involving
Apaches and Mexican residents of Doña Ana; discusses deprivations,
negotiations with Apache chief Santos and imprisonment of Lobo.

Hovey reports on his trip to Pecos to look into complaint by resident
Alexander Valleys (Alejandro Valle) that a party of Jicarilla Apache
warriors stole his stock of animals.

Albuquerque, NM to Governor Merriwether and Superintendent of Indian
Affairs, Santa Fe, NM. September 14, 1853
Garland in response to General McFerran's letter informs about steps
to take in regard to the "bad conduct" of a group of Apache Indians
from the White Mountains and his trip to Fort Fillmore to have them
chastised. Also mentions a proposed colony of two hundred Mexican
families near the White Mountains.
