Biography

Writer, John Sinclair, was born in New York City in 1902. He was raised and educated in Scotland and moved to New Mexico in 1923. He was curator of the Lincoln County Museum from 1940-1944, and superintendent of Coronado State Monument from 1944-1962.

Scope and Content

The collection contains photographs of cowboy author John Sinclair, his wife Evelyn, their friends, and various places in New Mexico where they lived, photographed, or that figured in their writings. There are photos related to Sinclair's family in Scotland and ranching activities in the Southwest.

Many of the photos have appeared in New Mexico Magazine; some were published in Sinclair's books, Central City and Gold Dollar. Most of the images date from c.1930 to c.1939; most images from the addition are later in date. Includes albumen prints (c.1880-90) of Mescalero Apache agency and camp sites, and views of Fort Stanton N.M. There is also a modern copy print of a Zuni Shalako ceremonial of 1897, taken by Ben Wittick. Other photographs include Pueblo potter Maria Martinez and landscapes of New Mexico and Colorado. Some negatives are not printed.

Alternate Format Available

Three photos from the John L. Sinclair Pictorial Collection are available online via New Mexico Digital Collections.
