Biography

Tony Hillerman, writer and teacher, was born May 27, 1925 in Sacred Heart, Oklahoma. He grew up in this rural community, joined the army when the United Stated entered World War II, and served two years in Europe. He returned to Oklahoma and received a BA from the University of Oklahoma in 1946.

He worked as a newspaper reporter in Texas and Oklahoma, and in New Mexico from 1952 until 1962, when he came to the University of New Mexico as a graduate student in English. Hillerman received his MA in 1966 and became a professor of journalism, serving as department chair 1967-74. He retired from teaching in 1986.

Hillerman continued writing until his death, October 26, 2008, in Albuquerque, New Mexico of pulmonary failure.

Scope and Content

This collection contains formal and informal photographs of author Tony Hillerman and others, along with places, southwest landscapes, and events, from the late 1920s to approximately 2000. The majority of the photographs of Hillerman are anonymous, with the notable exception of Series 4, photographed by Barney Hillerman, and a few author portraits stamped with photographer or studio information. Many of the personal photographs have been published in biographies of Hillerman. Contact sheets present positive prints of most of the 35mm slides, transparencies, and negatives. Further, the slides and negatives are generally also represented as photographic prints.

The collection is arranged into 6 series.

Series 1 is the original accession, photographic material separated from the Papers.

Series 2 contains photographs of Hillerman in individual and group settings.

Series 3 contains places and landscapes.

Series 4 is a series of Hillerman Country landscapes.

Series 5 are 35mm slide positives and 3x4 negative and positive transparencies.

Series 6 includes oversize items.
