Scope and Content

Collection consists of original documents and photocopies involving Acoma and Laguna Indian Pueblos in New Mexico. Includes letters and various legal documents. Much of the collection concerns legal disputes between Acoma and Laguna Pueblos over land tenure, boundaries, and water rights. Also within the collection is a 1904 letter to officials at Acoma Pueblo from officials at New Mexico's eight northern Pueblos requesting united opposition among all Pueblos to the New Mexico Supreme Court's declaration that Pueblo Indians and lands are subject to taxation.

(?) May 7. Spanish translation of letter from Acting Commissioner of Indian Affairs C.E. Mix, to Superintendent of Indian Affairs for New Mexico L.E. Webb, stating that Pueblo Agent John Ward and delegates for the Pueblo Indians, Alejandro Padilla and Ambrosio Abeita have been in Washington to protest district court decision which would deprive the Pueblos of their lands and protection of the Federal Government. Agent Ward will be reimbursed for his expenses. Two copies. Notation on second document indicates it was copy given to Pueblo delegates at Isleta August 9.

1888-1889. Jose Leon Telles, Justice of the Peace of San Rafael, Precinct #17, Valencia County. Order charging Andres Martin and Solomon Bibo of the Pueblo of Acoma with protecting the limits of the land patented to the Pueblo of Acoma from trespassers. This document is undated but Solomon Bibo was governor of Acoma during these years.

1904 Mar. 24. Officials of the northern Pueblos of Taos, San Juan, Santa Clara, San Ildefonso, Nambe, Pojoaque, Tesuque and Picuris to the officials of the Pueblo of Acoma. Statement of united opposition to Territorial Supreme Court decision declaring the Pueblo Indians citizens and their land subject to taxation and requesting united action of all Pueblos to oppose the decision with federal and territorial authorities.
