Administrative History

RG01--IAIA Records compiled by Chuck Dailey, has an interesting yet complicated administrative history. Prior to its reorganization in 1986, the Institute of American Indian Arts operated under the Department of Interior Bureau of Indian Affairs, Education Division. Between 1962 and 1986, records were to be removed from IAIA and forwarded to either the Ft. Worth or Denver National Archives facilities. However, it is believed that only 10-20 boxes of records exist at those records facilities. However, the larger issue, as Chuck Dailey wrote in 2007, 'the archives has not been planned nor organized in any rational manner. As I began picking up anything I could find, I took everything". Dailey arrived to IAIA in 1971 and observed that each administrator maintained their own filing systems. Dailey remembers 'when I arrived in 1971, the campus operated with mimeo graphic memos, typewritten documents, carbon copies and original materials. I saved everything because I thought it was important." Dailey slowly acquired keys to the dorms, offices, library, and administrative buildings and at night, 'clean up' offices and rooms and kept 'correspondence, memos, forms, and purchase orders. He picked up anything he thought to be valuable but refrained from going into the office filing cabinets. This 'accumulation' by Dailey, from 1971-2007, is what RG-01 is today.

Scope and Content

RG-01, IAIA Records, 1961-Present, consists of the surviving records of the Institute of American Indian Arts, a division of the Bureau of Indian Affairs until 1986, and its associated museum. Since there was no records management program at IAIA, very few records were formally retained by the administration, faculty, or staff over the course of the Institutions existence. Charles Dailey, a former faculty member and the director of the IAIA Museum between 1971-2007, wisely compiled administrative records he deemed important, which are sparse, but maintained very good records for his museum and its operations. It is important to note that RG-01 must be viewed through the eyes of Mr. Dailey, not through the lenses of general operations. The records were stored in the basement of the IAIA Museum on the campus of the Santa Fe Indian School until their move to the present IAIA Museum on Palace Ave in 1992. Upon completion of the IAIA Campus in Santa Fe County, the records were moved into the current location in 2001. As the administrative records were compiled over the years, students taking Dailey’s “Museum Archives” course filed the records to no particular archival standards. Beginning in 2006, upon the hiring of IAIA’s first archivist, basic folder level inventories began to be compiled. Beginning in 2009, an effort was started to re-arrange and re-describe RG-01 according to current archival standards, as well as process previously unprocessed sections of the record group. The records are arranged by year, adhering to the previous arrangement schema. Each year is represented by a Sub-Group, i.e. SG-01-1961, SG-02, 1962, etc. Within each sub-group, there are two primary series; Series I: IAIA Educational and Administrative Records, and Series II: IAIA Museum Records. Because the Museum director compiled the vast bulk of RG-01, the Museum series is much more detailed and complete than the Educational and Administrative series.

IAIA Records, 1968 consists of correspondence, reports, student materials, collections records, ephemera, public relations materials, publications, and exhibit materials related to the activities of IAIA during the year 1968.

Of particular interest, the IAIA student dance exhibition in Mexico City, which corresponded with the 1968 Olympiad, is documented in detail as well as two exhibits in Washington D.C., an exhibit at the Field Museum, and one in Argentina.
