The Bandelier collection consists of artifacts, documents, illustrations, maps, and photographs. For the most part all are in stable condition. The bulk of the collection came to the library upon the death of Mrs. Fanny Ritter Bandelier in accordance with the terms of her will. Other Bandelier memorabilia and artifacts were donated by various persons who were friends of the Bandeliers.
Of the document portion of the collection, Bandelier's journals stand out. The originals made by Bandelier cover the years 1880 to 1911. Of these journals, the collection has Fanny Bandelier's hand transcriptions of those journals relating to New Mexico and the Southwest (1880 to 1892). These transcriptions have been typed. Some have additionally been edited prepatory to their publication.
Bandelier's correspondence and that of his wife constitute another important portion of the collection. Correspondence about the Bandeliers and the Bandelier Journals are decidedly larger in volume than the Bandelier letters.
This series of the collection consists of those manuscripts written by Bandelier, but not published, and documents related to the Spanish borderlands in North America. Although these documents, which Bandelier collected in Bolivia and Spain, focus upon New Mexico, they are not limited to the Southwest. Some of these documents are originals; those pertaining to the American Southwest are transcriptions which the Bandeliers were collecting at the time of Adolph Bandelier's death in Sevilla, Spain in 1914.
This series is composed of published books and articles by Adolph Bandelier and those by other authors which made up part of Bandelier's personal library. Within the archival collections are only the articles; the books have been removed to the Fray Angélico Chávez History Library.
This series now contains only illustrations of artifacts made by Bandelier for his studies. The photographs of Bandelier and his family have been removed to Photo Collections. The map is now in the Map collection of the Fray Angélico Chávez History Library.
This is a miscelleany of various momentos. Fanny Bandelier's lectures, translations, diaries and scrapbooks are included here. The memorabilia relating to Adolph Bandelier and his memorial were supplied by his friends.
