Biography of D. C. Abrams

Dietrich Charles Abrams was born in Laramie, Wyoming, in 1869. His parents, Sophia and Rudolph(?) Abrams, operated the New York House, a hotel on First Avenue between Grand and Ivinson, from 1868 to 1876. D.C. Abrams attended St. Mary’s School (Laramie), the Colorado Seminary (Denver), and Laramie High School, then entered the University of Wyoming preparatory department in 1887. He received a bachelor’s degree in 1892 and a Master’s of Science in 1897. He began playing the piano at an early age and participated in many local concerts. He also played on the University of Wyoming football team, and he was appointed captain in the Wyoming National Guard in 1893. Abrams left Laramie in 1900, but returned in 1913 for the inauguration of Clyde A. Duniway as University of Wyoming president and in 1937 for the university’s semi-centennial celebration.


Scope and Content

Box 1 contains souvenir letters from the 1876 Centennial Exposition; programs and progress reports from St. Mary’s School (1878-1881), Colorado Seminary (1883-1884), Laramie High School (1886-1887), and the University of Wyoming (1887-1897) including commencements, military balls, oratorical contests, and Olympic Society dinners; programs and invitations for Laramie social events, especially concerts (1875-1899); news clippings regarding D.C. Abrams and his friends and family (1889-1937); photographs of D.C. Abrams (circa 1872-circa 1900); a photograph of the University of Wyoming library and a photograph of the hanging of George Black (1890); a poem to Jennie Caldwell (circa 1880s); a program and photograph of the inauguration of Clyde A. Duniway as University of Wyoming president (1913), and miscellaneous materials. Box 2 contains certificates of D.C. Abrams (1884-1903).
