He served in France during World War I. After the war, he moved to Denver where he was an instructor of creative writing at the University of Denver. He sold his first three stories while in Denver. Universal Pictures promoted a contest for writers and Woods won second place for Flying Hoofs, a silent western film with a New Mexico setting that was released in 1925. He later taught creative writing at other universities including Hardin Simmons and the University of New Mexico. In 1951, he served as technical advisor on the script for the film, Apache Canyon. He was married to Betty Woods, a travel writer.
