Biography of Clee Woods

Clee Woods (b. 1893) was a western and travel writer of articles and fiction books. He was born in West Virginia and attended Alderson Baptist Academy and Marshall College, both in West Virginia. He served in France during World War I. After the war, he moved to Denver where he was an instructor of creative writing at the University of Denver. He sold his first three stories while in Denver. Universal Pictures promoted a contest for writers and Woods won second place for Flying Hoofs, a silent western film with a New Mexico setting that was released in 1925. He later taught creative writing at other universities including Hardin Simmons and the University of New Mexico. In 1951, he served as technical advisor on the script for the film, Apache Canyon. He was married to Betty Woods, a travel writer.


Scope and Content

The collection contains photocopies of letters to Clee Woods dating from 1927 to 1950 that are from book publishers, Universal Pictures, and 20th Century Fox. Some of the letters have handwritten comments in the margins written by Woods describing how the letters relate to his writing career. There are also reviews of books written by Woods, including Riders of the Sierra Madre, Rebels’ Rendezvous, and Buckaroo Clan of Montana. Some of the reviews have handwritten notes by Woods.
