Edward A. Altshuler (1919- ) graduated from the University of Texas in 1941 with a degree in communications. Upon graduation, Altshuler spent the next four and a half years working in public relations for the United States Air Force. After returning to civilian life, Altshuler became a prolific researcher, writer, and speaker on management techniques and better business practices. The majority of his work from the 1940s through the 1990s was divided between business consultation and business education. Altshuler retired as a business consultant in 2000 in order to devote more time to his writing and research.
The Edward A. Altshuler papers have been minimally processed and divided into eight series.
The Edward A. Altshuler papers contain the business and personal records created by Mr. Altshuler from 1930-2003. The majority of the materials are professional in nature, and reflect Mr. Altshuler’s work as a consultant, educator, and writer. As a whole, the collection demonstrates the evolution of small business practices and management techniques from post-World War II through the computer revolution of the late twentieth century. The personal records in the collection offer insight into Mr. Altshuler’s service in the United States Air Force, his family life, and his post-retirement writings.
In addition to Mr. Altshuler’s written records, there are a large number of audio and visual materials in the collection. These include photographs, audio recordings, and video recordings from business presentations given by Altshuler, attended conferences, and his personal life.
One notable part of the collection is the case history for Cadillac Shoe Products. Mr. Altshuler served as a consultant for Cadillac for sixteen years. Due to the length of his work with Cadillac, as well as the range of consulting work, these records offer a comprehensive look into the role of business consultants in the development of a small business.
There are no access restrictions on the materials for research purposes, and the collection is open to the public.
